Tomorrow Thursday August 27, 2026 is the feast day of Saint Monica, whom we see in this picture praying for her son, Saint Augustine. Following is a short prayer that I have composed to Saint Monica for our children, grandchildren, etc.

Great St. Monica, patroness of fathers and mothers, please take our children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews under your protection.

Here state their names.

Intercede for them before the throne of God, so that they will follow the ways of God and His Church and always remain faithful to God. Ask God to give them strength to walk always in the ways of the Lord, despite the temptations and false values they find in the world today. I pray that they may share with you in the joys of eternal life in God. Amen.

Saint Monica married a pagan, who had a violent temper and was licentious. Her cantankerous mother-in-law lived with the two of them as well. They also had at least one child who survived infancy. Through her great patience and constant prayers along with her example of kindness, Monica was blessed with the conversion to Christianity of her husband, mother-in law and her son, Saint Augustine. In his book, The Confessions of Saint Augustine, her son relates how clearly Monica identified her life’s mission as delivering her children into the life of faith.

Saint Michael's Lent. Click on the “See More” link to read more.

Similar to Lent before Easter, Saint Michael’s Lent is a 40-day period of prayer and penance that begins on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Saturday August 15, 2026 and ends on the feast day of the Holy Archangels: St. Michael, St. Gabriel and St. Raphael on Tuesday September 29, 2026.
During this time of world-wide unrest and unease, this time of devotion is an opportunity for believers in God to renew their faith and grow in union with God and ask for the help of the Holy Archangels: St. Michael, St. Gabriel and St. Raphael.

During Saint Michael’s Lent do the following on a daily basis.
Pray to the Holy Archangels: St. Michael, St. Gabriel and St. Raphael. One such prayer is Heavenly King, you have given us archangels to assist us during our pilgrimage on earth. Saint Michael is our protector; I ask him to come to my aid, fight for all my loved ones, and protect us from danger. Saint Gabriel is a messenger of the Good News; I ask him to help me clearly hear Your voice and to teach me the truth. Saint Raphael is the healing angel; I ask him to take my need for healing and that of everyone I know, lift it up to Your throne of grace and deliver us back to the gift of recovery. Holy Archangels St. Michael, St. Gabriel and St. Raphael pray for us.

Spend time in praying prayers in addition to the above, doing acts of penance and making an honest effort to be humble, modest, kind, chaste, charitable, self-controlled, patient, generous, diligent, loving, hopeful, just, prudent and doing what is right.

Also, if you are Catholic, make a good effort to properly confess your sins in the Sacrament of Penance, properly attend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and to properly receive Holy Communion. If, for a good reason, you cannot receive Holy Communion make an Act of Spiritual Communion such as the following. Act of Spiritual Communion written by St. Alphonsus de Liguori: "My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.”

End this period of prayer and penance by praying an Act of Consecration, such as the following, to the Archangels on Tuesday September 29, 2026.

I, (state your name), a repentant sinner, with contrite heart, recollect myself before Your glorious presence, my Lord and my God Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Angels, I, a humble disciple of Jesus, seek to place myself under the care of Your beloved holy angels, Archangels Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel.

Today I consecrate myself to you, o beneficent messengers of the heavens Defend me in battle from the wiles of my enemies I beg of you this day, and every day, to alert me to the temptations and dangers that seek to draw me from the loving embrace of my Triune God I beseech your wisdom and ask, beloved Archangels, to illumine my mind Inform my thoughts and desires towards good, and my heart towards humility and self-donation Awake, I joyfully seek to join in the work of heaven, in the building up of the Kingdom of God and for the salvation of souls.

Sanctus Sanctus Sanctus: holy archangels, you who stand before the face of God on my behalf, keep me in your holy care, that I may grow steadfast in virtue and holiness, perfect as my heavenly Father is perfect. Hear my supplication and obtain for me, seraphic guardians of God, the assistance necessary: that I may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Following is a prayer for the intercession of Saint John Vianney for more holy priests.

Dear Saint John Vianney, your childhood dream was to be a Priest, to win souls for God. You endured years of toil and humiliation to attain the Priesthood. You became a Priest truly after God’s own heart, outstanding in humility, mortification, poverty and prayer. Totally devoted to the service of God’s people. The Church has exalted you as model and patron saint of all Parish Priests, trusting that your example and prayers will help them to live up to the high dignity of their vocation to be faithful servants of God’s people, to be perfect imitators of Christ the Savior Who came not to be served but to serve, to give His Life in ransom for many.

Pray that God may give to His Church today many more Priests after His own Heart. Pray for all the Priests under your patronage, that they may be worthy representatives of Christ the Good Shepherd. May they wholeheartedly devote themselves to prayer and penance; be examples of humility and poverty; shining models of holiness; tireless and powerful preachers of the Word of God; zealous dispensers of God’s Grace in the Sacraments. May their loving devotion to Jesus in the Eucharist and to Mary His Mother be the Twin Fountains of fruitfulness for their ministry. Amen.

Today is the feast day of Saint Ignatius of Loyola who practiced a daily examination of conscience. Following is modification of his technique of prayerful reflection on all that he did during the day in order to detect God’s presence and discern his direction for him.
The Examen is an ancient practice in the Church that can help us see God’s hand at work in our whole experience. The method presented here is adapted from the five-step daily Examen described by Saint Ignatius Loyola in his Spiritual Exercises and practiced by him.

If you have not done the daily examination of conscience before, now is a good time to start. The daily examination of conscience is a technique of prayerful reflection on the events of the day in order to see God’s presence in my life and discern his direction for me.

The AGARTED method presented here I have adapted from a technique described by Ignatius Loyola in his Spiritual Exercises and it should take you only about fifteen minutes.

Alert yourself to the presence of God by coming into the awareness that God is present within you and in all that surrounds you.

Give Thanks by spending a few moments reviewing the events of today with gratitude for today’s gifts.

Ask God to send you His Holy Spirit and ask the Holy Spirit to help you look at your actions, attitudes and motives with honesty and patience.

Review your day by recalling the events of your day; explore the context of your actions and by allowing God to speak, challenge, encourage and teach you.

Talk heart-to-heart with Jesus by sharing your thoughts with Jesus about your actions, feelings and interactions, and ask for forgiveness, and direction.

End with the Suscipe Prayer of Saint Ignatius of Loyola: “Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will. All that I have and call my own, you have given to me. To you, Lord, I return it. Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace that is enough for me.”
