This Sunday we stood at an empty tomb.

Week 5 of We Believe took us to Luke 24, where the women came early with spices and found the stone rolled away. "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!" Then they remembered his words.

The Creed says it plainly: "The third day he rose again from the dead." God did the last day first. And if you're living in day two right now, day two is not the last day.

This week: pick one promise of Jesus, write it down, and put it where you'll see it on Tuesday.

We Believe · Week 4: The Price of Mercy

Laundry. Dishes. The lawn. You finish it, and by Wednesday it needs doing again. Most of what we do, we stop. Very little do we actually finish.

On Sunday we talked about the one job that was finished.

In the ancient temple, priests offered sacrifices every morning and every evening, day after day, and there were no chairs in the room. Nobody ever sat down. The Bible says Jesus offered himself once, and then "he sat down" (Hebrews 10:12).

Nobody sits down in the middle of a job.

Christians believe that whatever we owe God, Jesus has already paid. The one empty chair in that room is His.

We all know someone called "Chief" or "Coach" who isn't actually in charge of anything. The name is friendly, but nobody does what he says.

A title you do not obey is not a title. It is a nickname.

On Sunday we looked at one of the most common things Christians say about Jesus: that he is "Lord." In the Bible, Jesus asks a blunt question about that word: "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?" (Luke 6:46)

He isn't looking for the right answer on a test. He's asking whether we'll actually follow him.

One idea for your week: think of one thing Jesus taught that you already agree with but aren't doing. Try it once.

Whatever you believe, you're welcome to join us. Sundays at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Mount Holly.

Genesis 1 does not open with an argument. It opens with a hand at work. Light separated from darkness. Water given a limit. Seed put inside fruit so life could keep going without being started over.

And then John says the same hand that made the world signs your name into the family. Not permission. Not ability. Standing.

If something in your life is formless and empty this week, say it out loud over that thing: the God who orders chaos is not intimidated by yours.

Here is the prayer we are carrying together this week:
Almighty and everlasting God, you made the universe with all its marvelous order, its atoms, worlds, and galaxies, and the infinite complexity of living creatures: Grant that, as we probe the mysteries of your creation, we may come to know you more truly, and more surely fulfill our role in your eternal purpose; in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (The Book of Common Prayer)

Every family hands something down. The laugh nobody taught you. The chicken salad recipe card that still doesn't come out like Nana's.

Yesterday we started We Believe — nine weeks in the Apostles' Creed — with the bigger question: somebody handed you a faith. On purpose. With great effort.

If you wrote a name on your handout, tell that person this week.

Here is the prayer I am asking us to say each day together, all week long:

"Lord, teach us to seek you, and reveal yourself to us when we seek you. For we cannot seek you unless you first teach us, nor find you except you reveal yourself to us. Let us seek you in longing, and long for you in seeking; let us find you in love, and love you in finding, O Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen." (by Anselm)

Say it in the morning. In the car. At bedtime.

Next Sunday: The Hand of the Maker. from Genesis 1, Psalm 29, and John 1:12

Join us Sunday, September 13, right after worship for a church-wide covered-dish lunch. We'll share a meal together, meet the Journey to Jubilee planning team, and talk about the season of renewal our church is stepping into.

Bring a dish to share — there's always plenty, and there's a seat for you whether you bring something or not.

Please RSVP by Sunday, September 6 so we can plan accordingly. You can RSVP through Realm - https://bit.ly/4xBiDhp - or call or email Rebecca Hope at [email protected].
