John3:19 ‘evil’

06/04/2026

John 3:19 "And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil."

If you reject a light if you are in the dark, your condemnation is in your own rejection. Jesus tells us that THE "light is come into the world" and as it said elsewhere "which lighteth every man that cometh into the world" (see John 1:9). All are given the "light" of revelation, and Jesus tells us the reason men are not saved, "men loved darkness rather than light." From the beginning of creation - once man sinned, was drove from the Garden, and pronounced guilty - man has lived in a permanent shadow-land that many prefer the darkest shadows over the light that creates it. If you reject the only hope of escape, rescue, and/or help the condemnation is your own fault! Jesus added that "their deeds were evil" as their affinity for the darkness! Man is a shadow creature, but the light breaks thru to "every man" and gives him a path out of the darkness to the light. That path has a cross as its guiding light, an empty tomb as its North Star, and a risen King as its illumination of hope!

Ps111:1 ‘heart’

06/03/2026

Psalm 111:1 "Praise ye the LORD. I will praise the LORD with my whole heart, In the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation."

The Psalmist extols his people to give the "LORD" the type of "praise" He deserves, "with" a "whole heart." Two groups are mentioned, while one can be a subset of the other. First, is the "upright" or the just and pleasing to God group. We today would think of this as the truly converted and saved. The second group is a larger, and the first may be included in it, more general group, "the congregation." This should be understood as the assembly or a crowd. In our context today, this would be the gathering of saint and sinner alike. The Psalm is about praising "the LORD" with a "whole heart" both sinner and saint! One rightfully may protest how can a sinner (unsaved) person give God their "whole heart"? Ah...to which I would reply, by first giving God one's heart in the first place! Paul later writes, "if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (see Romans 10:9). Then let the sinner join the saint in praising God forevermore!

John3:17 ‘condemn’

06/02/2026

John 3:17 "For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved."

Our passage today follows what many consider the most well-known and much beloved, John 3:16. Yet, our verse today, that follows John 3:16, is a powerful and important aspect of the coming of Jesus as any passage in the New Testament. Jesus said that God didn't send "his Son into the world to condemn" it, and the world deserved God's wrath and judgment. Rather, Jesus said the coming of the Son of God was "through him" we "might be saved." The doctrine of final things (eschatology) teaches that the Lord returns one day to judge the world and the sin we have all been guilty of. The first coming of the Lord was not for that purpose, though. Jesus' incarnation, becoming a man and taking on human flesh, was important for the work of salvation. As John 3:16 tells us, "God so loved the world" and 17 tells us, "that the world through him might be saved." I praise God that Jesus' first coming secured my salvation and His second coming is "unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation" (see Hebrews 9:28).

Ps117:2 ‘great’

06/01/2026

Psalm 117:2 "For his merciful kindness is great toward us: And the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD."

The writer said, "Praise ye the LORD." He also mentions to great reasons to do so. First, God's "kindness" (based on His mercy!) "is great toward us." The kindness of God is one aspect or attribute that I think is often overlooked. God is omnibenevolent (all goodness or all well-wishing/doing for the good) as much as He is omnipresent or omniscient. This means those qualities of God that are expressed as mercy, grace, and kindness are extensions of His omnibenevolence. Elsewhere the Psalmist said, "God is good" (see Psalm 73:1, and His goodness is everlasting and eternal. The second reason to praise God is that "the truth of the LORD endureth for ever." The One, God, is faithful to His word and promises. The Psalmist is talking about the "LORD" (YHWH/Jehovah) that is the personal and covenantal name of God. When used in the Old Testament it was almost always to express the faithfulness and covenant keeping aspect of God's character. God's word is ultimately about what God said and what He will do. God promises and He keeps His promises. To which we can say, PRAISE YE THE LORD!
