Today is Epiphany, the end of the Christmas season and the day we celebrate the magi that came from a distant land to offer gifts to Mary, Joseph, and young Jesus. We solemnly also remember that this act of generous worship will incite a wicked king to massacre Bethlehem’s young. Today is also the day we mark a grim anniversary of a deadly insurrection at our capitol. Whatever this day may hold for you, may you be attentive to the light of God that will draw you to strangers and strangers to you for both your sakes. However perilous your journey might be, as it was for the magi and for Jesus’ family, know that the light will lead you to Christ. And while physical and emotional safety cannot be guaranteed, know that neither tyrant nor terror can keep you from your spiritual home in God.
