Heal the Land

Heal the Land Heal the Land is a agricultural pilot project in UMB whose mission is to work with farmers to develop sustainable methods of farming.

As you know, we have fought for over six months to stop the spreading of human waste sludge in our Upper Mount Bethel (UMB) community. We are happy to report that we have found common ground with two farmers who will start using sustainable farming methods. We have created a non-profit called "Heal the Farmland", which is a 3-5 year farming pilot project that will study the use of cover crops or "green manure" as an alternative to using sludge and chemicals.

It is our intention to fund this project with individual and corporate donations, and grants. We call upon all of you who fought with us, to support this community project with a financial donation and help us make it a huge success.

Your tax-deductible donations will be used for expenses and supplies directly related to the cover crop project, including: administrative costs, advertising and marketing, cover crop seed, helicopter & pilot fees, specialized equipment, and soil and water testing.

Additionally, your donation will help fund local agri-tourism activities such as, an 2015 “AG Day in UMB” event featuring guest speakers, photographs taken by a local artist, slide shows and video presentations, horse drawn wagon tours of the pilot project, locally grown food booths, music, and a children’s poster contest held by the Bangor Elementary School Art Department. Everyone in UMB and beyond will be invited to learn about the life in the soil beneath his or her feet. Your name as a donor will be prominently displayed in all activity programs.

If we can make this project a success, it is our hope that sustainable agriculture will take hold in UMB and will remain the “new standard” of farming practices.

“Good farmers, who take seriously their duties as stewards of
Creation and of their land's inheritors, contribute to the welfare of society in more ways than society usually acknowledges, or even knows. These farmers produce valuable goods, of course; but they also conserve soil, they conserve water, they conserve wildlife, they conserve open space, they conserve scenery.” ― Wendell Berry
