Stumbling in the Light
Something my daughter told me she heard….
“There is a difference between stumbling in the light and walking in the darkness”.
Both involve failure. Both involve moments where we fall short, but they are not the same.
A person who walks in darkness has chosen a direction away from God. Darkness hides truth, resists conviction, and makes sin feel normal.
But someone who stumbles in the light is different.
They are walking toward God. They are pursuing righteousness. They are trying to follow the path.
And sometimes, they trip.
The enemy loves to blur this distinction. He whispers that a stumble means you were never truly walking with God. He wants shame to convince you that your fall proves you belong in the dark.
But Scripture tells a different story.
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son purifies us from all sin.”
1 John 1:7
Notice it doesn’t say if we walk perfectly in the light.
It simply says walk in it.
Walking in the light means we remain open before God. When we stumble, we don’t hide. We confess, we repent, and we get back up.
Scripture even tells us that righteous people fall.
“For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.”
Proverbs 24:16
The righteous fall, but they rise again.
The difference between the righteous and the wicked is not perfection. It is direction.
Darkness runs from the light, but those who belong to God will always find themselves drawn back to it.
And once we are walking in the light, something else becomes clear.
The light was never meant to stop with us.
Jesus commands us to carry it outward.
“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”
Mark 16:15
This is not a suggestion. It is a command.
Who needs the gospel the most?
Those who are still walking in darkness.
Jesus Himself spent His time with those very people, tax collectors, sinners, the rejected, the lost, not to join them in darkness, but to lead them out of it.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”
Matthew 5:14
Light has a purpose: to shine where darkness exists.
So while we continue our own walk with God, sometimes steady, sometimes stumbling, we must remember the mission.
There are people all around us walking in darkness who cannot yet see the path.
And God has placed light within us to help guide them.
Scripture speaks about this responsibility with urgency.
“Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter.”
Proverbs 24:11
And even more directly:
“Be merciful to those who doubt; save others by snatching them from the fire.”
Jude 22–23
That is the calling of every believer.
Walk in the light. Rise when you stumble. And reach back into the darkness to help someone else find their way to Jesus.
Because the light that saved you was never meant to be hidden.
It was meant to shine into the darkness and lead others home.
Closing Prayer
Father God,
Thank You for guiding us through this time together. Thank You for Your light that shines into every corner of our hearts, even when we stumble. Lord, help us walk faithfully in Your ways and give us courage to reach out to those still in darkness, bringing them Your truth and love. Protect our minds, renew our strength, and fill our hearts with peace that surpasses all understanding. Let our words and actions reflect Your grace so that we may honor You in everything we do.
We ask all of this in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who is our light and our salvation.
Amen.
