St Michael Poplar Springs Catholic Church

St Michael Poplar Springs Catholic Church Church of good people and great truth! St. Michael’s Church was founded in 1879 by an unknown priest—at least he said he was a priest.

This mystery man dressed in the attire of a Catholic clergyman, approached Mr. Kuhn, who owned property on what is now Hardy Road and St. Michael’s Road, and requested that Mr. Kuhn let him use his residence to say Mass. He told Mr. Kuhn, who was not a Catholic, that Pope Leo had recently proclaimed that “Wherever there were Catholics with no church to worship in, Mass should be celebrated once a

month during Lent.” This was not true, but Mr. Kuhn not knowing differently, agreed to the use of his home. The young priest ate dinner with the Kuhn family and left the next morning. He was never heard from again. Mr. Kuhn checked with the bishop, but no one had any idea who the “young priest” was, where he came from or where he went. However, thinking the priest would return, Mr. Kuhn proceeded to advertise in Mt. Airy and Woodbine, that Mass would be celebrated the following Sunday. Twenty Catholics gathered as planned on two succeeding Sundays, but a priest never arrived. So the group just sang hymns. Hoping to get a priest on a regular basis. Kuhn contacted the bishop, the superior of St. Charles College in Baltimore and the rector of Woodstock College. The Rev. Charles Ferrari, S.J. was sent to look into the matter and became the first priest to say Mass for the small gathering at Mr. Kuhn’s home. At this time, Mr. Kuhn and two of his children were baptized. Kuhn then donated the ground for both the church and cemetery which are still here today. On June 12, 1880, the cornerstone was laid for St. Michael’s Church (the building now known as the “Small Church”). On October 18, 1880 the first Mass was celebrated by Rev. Edward I. Devitt, who three years later became St. Michael’s first regular pastor.

Friends,
I want to remind you that as we prepare for construction in the church and fellowship hall on June 1, starting this weekend, Mass and funerals will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room. Designated handicapped parking will be in front of the Multi-Purpose Room. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered in Room 107.

Please be patient with each other as we all learn new procedures and adapt to new routines. Everyone who has experienced a move or a home renovation project knows to anticipate the unexpected, but also understands that the hardships and sacrifices will be worthwhile when everything is finally complete.

I want to point out a couple of things regarding the celebration of Mass for the next several months, hopefully by the end of November. As we gather for the Eucharist at weekend Masses in the Multi-Purpose Room, I want to suggest that the best posture during the Eucharistic Prayer (the consecration) in the absence of kneelers is to remain standing. For those who cannot stand for long periods of time, it is acceptable to be seated. Standing for the Eucharist is the most ancient posture of the Church at prayer in the earliest centuries as a sign of respect, reverence, and active worship. It is also a sign of unity in our worship that we maintain the same posture together. And we do the same in receiving Holy Communion. In the Dioceses of the United States, the proper posture to receive communion is standing (this is the official policy as "particular law" for the Church in the USA). Though some may choose to kneel, I encourage everyone to observe the same posture as a sign of unity as we share in the Lord's Body and Blood, the source and sign of unity.

At the back of the Multi-Purpose-Room there will be a few tables set up for individuals using wheelchairs and those who need something to hold onto when getting up. If your baby, toddler, (or adult) is fussy, Room 107 will be open. However, CLOW will be held there in case of inclement weather. There will also be a TV in that room live-streaming the Mass. Please note—due to space considerations, there will be no toys available.

Finally, since the foyer of the Multi-purpose Room is smaller than the Narthex, our H.U.G.G.S. ministry recommends that the Ushers release sections of seating one at a time after Mass. If everyone leaves simultaneously, there will be a bottleneck, which poses safety concerns. Therefore, after the closing hymn, the music ministry will ask you to be seated. The altar servers, lectors, and clergy will not process out. If you wish to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick or greet the clergy, you can meet them near the altar.

St. Joseph the Worker, pray for us!
Fr Paul
