🦉 In the shrouded mist of a winter burial, we were given this gift. We were honored to witness a short-eared owl hunting over Mountain View Meadow, its quiet, ethereal flight a reminder that life continues even in moments of farewell.

Wishing you peace, reflection, and quiet moments of renewal and hope this holiday season. ❄️

Happy Winter Solstice❄️

After years of waiting in snow and rain at dawns and dusks, a rare break in the winter clouds allowed us to observe the winter solstice sunrise, putting the last peg in our Solar Tracker 🪵!

As expected, the sun rose at a point on the horizon directly opposite the peg that marks the summer solstice sunset.

Our solar tracker, made from a 147-year-old Douglas Fir lost in a wildfire, is located in Mountain View Meadow which sits on a ridge high above the Columbia River. It offers something unusual and quietly stunning: views of both sunrise and sunset from the same place. With the completion of the Solar Tracker, visitors can now see the points along the horizon where the sun rises and sets for each solstice and equinox - marking the slow, steady turning of the year. In these movements, we’re reminded that even at the darkest point, the light returns, and that life, death, and renewal are not endings, but part of the same enduring cycle 🌿.

✨ A view that needs no filter! ✨

One of our plot owners shared this photo, taken while standing on their plot after a visit and a hike through the trails at Great River Natural Burial.

It’s deeply healing to spend time on the land — whether for reflection, remembrance, or simply enjoying the view. 🌿

Honoring Labor and Gratititude

This Labor Day, we pause to honor the quiet work that shapes our communities and our world - the hands that nurture and care, that sustain life and memory, some seen and some quietly felt.

We also pause in gratitude for the Earth, which receives our loved ones through natural burial, not an end, but a beginning, where each return to the earth fosters growth and renewal.

Look who’s growing up! 🐾 and look at those ears!!

Remember the family of fluff balls just a few weeks ago? Now this adolescent coyote pup is lanky, alert and still stealing hearts at Great River. 💛

Can you spot him? 👀

I saw a baby bobcat slip into the brush to stay cool on this hot summer day. I feel so lucky to have seen him at Great River! So many critters call this special place home.

Nature has a way of surprising you when you slow down and look closely. 🌿🦁

Join us 🌿

We’re honored to host Tamara Thiel, Columbia Gorge Death Doula and author of Speaking of Death, for the final workshop in her “Speaking of Death” series—tomorrow 7/27 at 1:00PM at Great River Natural Burial.

This closing session is a walking tour of the cemetery with founders Russell and Stephanie Hargrave, and is open to the public.

Tamara’s book is a brief education on dying and death, helping you rethink your relationship with mortality and prepare you for end of life. It asks questions about living while holding dying and death in mind. It also includes valuable resources and references.

🌲 Laughter in the forest 🌿

🌞July outdoor learning camps run by Let’s Get Out are wrapping up at Great River. Here are our campers on the log teeter totter in our 🌲Tree Park 🌲- an area for free form play and team building with elements built from natural materials like big logs and boulders.

This is our vision in action - creating a place that connects people and nature on all points of the circle of life, not just the point of passing. Great River is not just a peaceful, final resting place, it is 150 acres where children - young and old - play, discover and are inspired to wonder and learn 🌿💚

Look who we spotted!
These little fluffballs—coyote pups—in the protected wildlife habitat of Great River. Natural burial doesn’t just return us to the earth; it helps preserve wildlife habitat. 🐾

So many of you reached out the days of the Columbia River Gorge wildfire, and we’re deeply grateful for your concern and so many offers to help. Our hearts go out to those impacted, and our thanks to the firefighters.🔥🚒

We know wildfire is a summer risk in the Gorge, and while no one can ever be entirely ready, we’ve taken steps:
🚨 Several water trucks onsite
🛣️ emergency meeting points/evacuation plans and multiple exit routes from all sides of the 150 acres
📍 Past fire drills with local fire departments using our road/trail maps
💧 A fire-department-approved hydrant and 30,000-gallon water tank

Thank you for being part of this community—stay safe this July 4th, for the sake of all who share this land, great and small. 🌿
