Mini Sermon:
Generational Wisdom
Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and do not ignore your mother’s teaching; 9 For they are a graceful wreath for your head and necklaces for your neck. Proverbs 1:8-9
Remember when you thought your parents knew nothing? They couldn't relate to your experience; they didn't know how tough it was to grow up in the environment that you had. And then you get older and will likely get accused of the same thing. It's not that generations before us don't understand what we are going through, it’s that they do understand, and they want to protect us from making the same mistakes and falling into the same difficulties they did.
Make an effort to listen to that older person who is giving you advice about your life. Perhaps there is some simple beauty to what they are saying, it might even be just the thing you need at the right moment. Accept wisdom and beauty will follow.

Mini Sermon:
Wiser
A wise person will hear and increase in learning, and a person of understanding will acquire wise counsel…Proverbs 1:5
Ask any teacher who their best students are, and they will say those who want to learn. It doesn't matter so much about an individual's intelligence or aptitude; it is almost always about attitude. This is the best way to think about wisdom.
We might associate wise with intelligent, but the Scripture here says that wise people are still listening and learning. The attitude of a wise person is that there is always something more to learn, and there is good advice yet to discover. Instead of wishing you were wise, or thinking you are wise enough, keep your heart open to listening and learning from Scripture. Find advice in the Living Word of God.

Mini Sermon:
Perspective
I know how to get along with little, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. 13 I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:12-13
Life doesn't seem to want us to be content. Contentment isn't valued; it is seen as average. We are geared toward improvement, novelty, and getting ahead. This creates a feeling of unsettledness in our minds and hearts, and it soon creeps into what we start to pursue. We think that if we had a better career path, more money, and a better lifestyle we would finally be happy. Yet this only leads to wanting more.
What Paul says, in this scripture, is that he has learned the secret of being content. This means that he sees something others may not. It's a matter of perspective. When we are able to value relationships over circumstance, love over material things, and eternal over temporal, we have learned the secret of contentment.

Mini Sermon:
Rejoice Always
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Philippians 4:4
Oh, to be ever the optimist! This verse feels like it belongs to those who are able to keep positive in the middle of the worst crises. For the rest of us, however, it might feel like we are capable of failing this “always rejoice” command on a daily basis. Life just isn't that nice all the time. You might not like your job, you may be in a difficult patch in your relationship, you may just be annoyed by your neighbor or someone at school.
There are endless situations in a mere day that leave us feeling like not rejoicing. So, what are we to do when things seem dull, frustrating, or depressing? Rejoice in the Lord! Yes, turn your focus off of yourself, and let your eyes turn toward Jesus. If you start to think of his goodness, grace, and mercy, your heart will slowly but surely find its joy and hope again. Don't despair, rejoice!

Mini Sermon:
Diamond in the Rough
And this I pray, that your love may overflow still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may discover the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and blameless for the day of Christ. Philippians 1:9-10
When a diamond is found in nature, it does not look like what we see on a shiny ring. While valuable, a diamond from the ground is dirty and uneven, hence the saying “a diamond in the rough”. This is like our process as followers of Christ.
We have always been incredibly valuable, and this is why Jesus endured the cross for us. But as we walk more in his presence, we find that our rough parts become smoother and shinier, and we get better at understanding and displaying the love of Christ. Instead of being discouraged by your rough edges, think about how you are being shaped into something excellent as you go through the process of refinement. You are becoming more exquisite by the day!

Mini Sermon:
Hopeful
God is not a man, that He would lie, nor a son of man, that He would change His mind; Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? Num. 23:19
When people have disappointed us again and again we tend to become distrusting of others. This is understandable; it's easier to have doubts and skepticism than to hope and be disappointed. Today, God wants to remind you that he is not an imperfect human, and he doesn't lie or give you false hope.
God has promised to be near you in all things, and he has promised to love you through everything. The hope that you have in his promises is true, and you have every right to believe in them. Strengthen your heart and be brave in what he has promised to do for you. God will not let you down!

Mini Sermon:
Blessing
The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 The Lord cause His face to shine on you and be gracious to you; 26 The Lord lift up His face to you and give you peace.’ Numbers 6:24-26
When was the last time someone prayed a blessing over you? It is comforting to experience someone expressing their desire to see you blessed. You may have come from a praying family where you experienced your parents praying over you. Perhaps you never grew up with blessings.
Today is a different day. This is a blessing especially for you. These are ancient words and yet today the Holy Spirit is bringing the words freshly to you and for you. May you be blessed and protected today. May you feel God's favor toward you and acceptance of you. May you experience his unexplainable peace in the middle of all your circumstances.

Mini Sermon:
Calloused
For the heart of this people has become dull, with their ears they scarcely hear, and they have closed their eyes, otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and return, And I would heal them. Matthew 13:15
Have you ever put on a pair of new shoes and formed a blister by the end of the day? It's a common problem. Once the blister is gone it becomes callous, and you stop feeling the pain. That is sometimes like the Christian faith. The story of Jesus and what He has done can cause people to feel all sorts of things; sometimes it can become downright uncomfortable. So, they let their hearts become calloused and then they no longer have to respond to the truth.
For those who remain open to Jesus’ words, they are sure to see clearly, to understand what He has done for them, and they would be ready for the new life he has created. Be encouraged today to stay open to the truth, even if it gets uncomfortable. Jesus is always looking to restore you.

Mini Sermon:
Building It Up
… Jesus said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and no city or house divided against itself will stand. Matthew 12:25
Do you remember a moment when you realized you just couldn't do it on your own? Today's culture encourages us to be independent. We can drive where we want, choose our own education, and decide what committees to belong to. This freedom of choice is a gift, and yet it can also lead us to feel as though we are the masters of our own destiny. As independent as modern life may be, we are still part of many social structures.
This means that at some point, will need to rely on others. It's better to learn to live in harmony with others than to see your workplace, church, or home become divided. If you are in a situation now where you are starting to see division, don't become part of the problem. Taking sides will only cause more fractures. We are called to unity this is what makes us all stronger and better people.
