Is 25:1 ….Your counsels of old are faithfulness (אֱמוּנָה - firm, secure, of full fidelity) and truth. (אֹמֶן - faithfully true)
Happy Devo-Monday beloveds!
To start this devo- let’s back up to the beginning for a moment of precedent… In Genesis we see the de-evolution of society from a people that “call on the name of the Lord” (Gen 4:26) & another that, in febrile fury, seek to flee from God’s attention (Gen 4:16).
As the two branches intertwine, one is strangled by the others’ greater commitment. Sadly, the one conscribed to it’s own annihilation surfaces with it’s hand raised in the ring.
The end result: whilst the world carries on in commonplace commerce, ceremony and routine, its underbelly shows a culture terminally infected with godless cruelty, unbridled selfishness, and heartless violence.
Whilst the impious simply carried on their trajectory, God’s people diverted from theirs, entering the unholy slip-road of self-centrism to intersect with the children of wrath. And how does that start? It begins with a deviation from the clear constitution their Creator had established for their own preservation.
The point is simple, the farther God’s people get from God’s unchanging truth, the more quickly they descend into Missional irrelevance and personal dismantling.
Note: faith will only come by giving attention, hearing intentionally, the word of God not seeking to rewrite it. (Ro 10:17)
I’ve always found it sadly fascinating that the church is more driven to try to make the things of Heaven more culturally relevant than to make the culture more heavenly so.
So we see the vandals of earth emerging from our pulpits, tagging over the writing on the wall with “no longer applicable”, as to allay any possible repentant concern the startled Belshazzars could have gotten from seeing it (Dan 5).
But the truth is not a democracy, nor subject to alteration by popular demand. “Let God be true and every man a liar” (Ro 3:4)
This is the very point and pulse of our being warned not to remove nor shift “the ancient landmarks” even to the point that those who do so would incur the curse of a wrath “poured out like water”! (Dt 19:14; 27:17; Hos 5:10)
We can not alter the everlasting word of God and then assume we can approach the eternal altar of God on our own terms. It is His, and therefore the rules of engagement are solely His to establish.
And we certainly cannot be so brazen as to tether ourselves to the benefits of God’s promises and unlace the prerequisites attached to them.
And yet, if we embrace the whole of God’s Holy Word with the open arms of faith we find glorious revelations of Jesus (and ourselves!) well beyond our own imaginations!
Interestingly, when Jesus asked His students who the populous saw in Him (Lk 9:18), none of those opinions included “the Christ, the Son of the Living God”.
When we go with the popular point-of-view, we will find ourselves creating a diminutive characature of our Saviour.
In our launch text, Isaiah is reminding us to stay our course, cling to our book, as the counsels of God will always be secure, full of fidelity, sure and without exception worthy of the entirety of our trust.
As Paul would put it all God’s promises are “Yes” & “Amen” (2 Cor 1:20)
So what counsel has the Lord given you that you may be tempted to ease your fingers and loosen your grip upon?
Now is not the time to grow cold and cavalier to the counsel of God, but rather, to firm our hold on his unchanging premises & promises, stay our minds upon His truth, and settle our hearts into His Counsel.
This world around us is not “evolving” into a new and better one, as there is certainly nothing “new under the sun” (Ecc 1:10) but rather slipping deeper into the pit of its own end-times downfall, much like the spiraling society before the flood in Genesis- (Lk 17:26-27)
Oh dear ones, let us eradicate from our spirits any supercilious attempt at sanding the sharp edges of God’s warnings and instead, with greater conviction of concentrated commitment, stand adamant and resolute, firm-footed upon God’s Word; from whence comes the gospel of Salvation; the only message capable of rescuing those currently free-falling in their own undoing!
Let it never be said that if such a desperate soul would, in frantic hope, ask any of us “do you really believe this?” that they can not find someone with resolved confidence proclaim, “yes I do! With all my heart!” Can we today? This is my blanket prayer for us all today!
