Our loved ones mean the world to us, even after they pass away. We all want to know their permanent resting site is taken care of. A group of volunteers is doing just that.

A question submitted through our PM... does anyone have information?

Does anyone know any logging of old cementary as a unified listing? Rhode Island has numerical historical listing that is different than the town to town log...hoping to know where to find this if does exist or who to contact to begin a log similar if we don't have one... also to have listing of whom to contact for preservation in general...I know of funding for protective boxes for rapidly deteriorating stones with historical significance but unsure where to gain permission... or where to find info about how to be involved in spring cleanups

The Jericho Center Cemetery is seeking advice on identifying parties who can dig cremation holes at their cemetery. Up until now, members of their Board always provided this service. But as the average age of their Board members has increased and physical ailments have occurred, they are no longer in a position to dig the holes themselves. Does anyone have any suggestions to share? Do you hire landscapers? A local person with a backhoe? Funeral homes? Please contact [email protected]

Bonnie Parenteau, a member of the Green Mountain VT DAR, is researching the topic of coins left on gravestones. She would like your opinion on the following:
1) Does it pose a problem?
2) Have you ever seen coins on gravestones?
3) How long do you leave them there?
4) Is there any downside to this, from your perspective?
If you would like to contact her directly, her email address is [email protected].
We look forward to your comments :)

COVID19 update: Wow! This has been quite the year. As many of our cemeteries close for the winter, I want to thank everyone for following the safe COVID19 guidelines.
Now is the time to review each cemeteries’ capacity for the potential of a major increase in burials due to the pandemic. Does your cemetery have plenty of lots to sell and use? Here at Green Mount, we are designing a new section that, hopefully, will be open this Spring. As a side note, back in the autumn of 1918 during the Spanish Flu, 70 burials occurred in 107 days here at Green Mount. Imagine 70 graves all dug with a shovel. With the cremation at a state rate of approximately 65%, I am somewhat concerned that we have enough lots and winter storage. We are not alone in this thought.
The Vermont Medical Examiner would like to know what the state-wide storage capacity for bodies.
For those cemeteries that have storage/potential storage (winter vaults that could be used again) - Please answer the following questions?
(cut and paste the questions and send answers to Patrick Healy directly ([email protected]) - please do not reply to this VCA email address)
1. Number of bodies that could be stored?
2. Do the bodies need to be embalmed?
3. Do the families need to be lot owners?
4. What date do the bodies need to be removed by?
5. Misc – any thoughts or questions?
6. Do any of your funeral directors have storage capacity?

For all Cemeterians – please send your questions to me ([email protected]) in regard to any cemetery topic and I will attempt to answer them and send the responds to all.
Once I have figured out the Zoom Meeting process, I am hoping to have a winter zoom meeting regarding Green/Natural burials.
Thank you for all you do for Vermont Cemeteries.

The Underhill Cemetery Association has a metal fence on Park Street and River Road sides of the cemetery, and this fence needs paint. The last time it was painted was 10 years ago and the Association paid $30.00 per section plus materials and there are approximately 100 sections. The Association hired a person this summer; they were able to get 8 sections (8 feet per section) done, but are unable to continue.

The Association has requested bids and have received two so far:
$175. per section (Approx. $17,500)
$115.00 per section plus materials (Approx. $15,000).
Because the Association operates with donations only, these bids are not affordable.

The Association is searching for volunteers to paint the fence. It takes approximately 2 hours to scrape; wire brush; and paint one section (8 feet long, 4 feet tall) The cemetery will provide:
Safety glasses
Gloves
Wire brushes
Putty knives for scraping
Paint
Paint brushes
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN PAINTING A SECTION OR TWO, PLEASE REPLY here or reach out to Randy Clark (see below).

If you are interested in volunteering your time, the Association will furnish the materials, PLEASE reply ASAP so the materials can be purchased and ready. If you are unable to help paint, but would like to give a donation toward the materials, the Association would be gladly accept. Donations can be mailed to Underhill Cemetery Association, PO Box 7, Underhill, VT 05489.

If you have questions about this project, please text or call 802-899-2233 Randy Clark, Sexton, Underhill Cemetery Assoc. or email him at: [email protected]

Thank you for your consideration...
