Rarely does a day pass without a report of hurt or hardship of one kind or other, the result of physical or mental abuse by friend or foe. And what of the picayune offenses, grudges and misdemeanors that disturb the peace and nag at the heart?

Caught in the crossfire of violence in the streets and war on battle fields across the globe, still reeling from the effects of earthquakes, floods, and forest fires; trapped in the face of political abuse and the relentless uncivil vindictive rage and vengeance in the public forum serving as fundraisers for losers where does forgiveness lay? At whom? For what? ...

Over recent weeks, no, recent months, I have been preoccupied with Catholic worship and in particular, the celebration of the Eucharist more commonly referred to as the Mass.

The Vatican II Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy stated that “the liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; it is also the fount from which all her power flows.” (n 10) Though this statement applies to the celebration of all the sacraments and sacramental services, it applies especially to the celebration of the Eucharist where the faithful celebrate their life in Christ as his Mystical Body.

Sometimes an insider initiates an intervention—a known or unknown figure , a whistleblower who brings to the attention of the church community or the nation issues of grave moral and social concern, e.g., human and civil rights, the rights of workers, the abuse of social media and A.I. and other life-issues that affect not only individual rights but also also the common good of the nation. I was a whistleblower in the midst of the scandal of sexual abuse in the Church challenging people in high places. Let me tell you, it’s a very lonely path. Father Tom Doyle one of the priest secretaries at the office of the Apostolic Nuncio sent a prophetic message to the U.S. Bishops’ Conference in 1985 that the Church in America would eventually suffer the loss of billions of dollars unless they dealt openly with the abuse scandal. As a result, he lost his job at the nunciature and his chances for the episcopacy. The report was deep-sixed. The rest is history.
