Sunday Sermon Recap for 04/12/2026: “Not Everything That Looks Good is Good for You"
📖Scripture: 2 Corinthians 11:14 — "And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light."
💡Introduction
Today, our very own Brother Travis Hutchinson brought forth a powerful Word, warning us against the dangers of surface-level appearances. We often operate under the assumption that if something appears appealing, beneficial, or "righteous," it must be from God. However, Brother Travis reminded us of the Apostle Paul’s warning to the Corinthian church: deception is the enemy's primary tool. Satan does not always come as a terrifying figure of darkness; he frequently masquerades as an "angel of light," presenting harmful choices as alluring, beneficial, or even spiritual.
🔑 Key Points
1. The Facade of Goodness (2 Cor 11:14): Satan disguises himself to make evil look attractive, reasonable, or good, aiming to steal, kill, and destroy. If he can make a lie look like the truth, he can deceive believers.
2. The Danger of "Itching Ears": We are warned in 2 Timothy 4:3 that people will seek teachers who say what they want to hear rather than sound doctrine. We often choose what is pleasurable over what is righteous.
3. The Need for Spiritual Discernment: We cannot trust appearances alone, as seen in. As explained by, we must allow the Holy Spirit to give us wisdom to look deeper than the surface to understand what is truly beneficial versus what is merely shiny.
4. Motive Check: If a path leads away from biblical truth, regardless of how enjoyable it looks, it is a dangerous detour.
🌎 Real-World Example
Consider the temptation of an addictive, unhealthy relationship or a dishonest financial shortcut. The "Angel of Light" Appearance: It looks like love, support, or "financial freedom" (looks good). The "Darkness" Reality: It requires abandoning biblical values, causes anxiety, and eventually leads to spiritual and emotional destruction (not good for you).
Application: Just as the fruit in Eden looked good for food and desirable for wisdom, many things today shine brightly but contain poison.
🕊️ Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word which protects us from the snares of the enemy. Lord, we confess that we are often fooled by appearances. We pray for a spirit of discernment and wisdom to see beyond the surface. Guard our hearts against temptation that looks beautiful but leads to brokenness. Help us to hide Your Word in our hearts so we can recognize the true light of Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.
