I cited this sermon summary by Pastor Jonny Rashid this past Sunday in my sermon. The link to the full article is in the comments.

"One reason I turn to these passages is that they can be difficult, and I think it’s important for us to wrestle with challenging scripture. However, the Revised Common Lectionary often avoids the more objectionable parts of the Bible; this year, it conveniently excludes challenging parts of 1 Peter. I think the RCL does us a disservice because we lose the opportunity to learn how to engage difficult passages. Avoiding them doesn’t help; in fact, many of us are inclined to shy away from parts of the Bible that feel hard, unsettling, or confusing."

“Church of the Brethren history and tradition include radical discipleship, conscientious objection, and participation in civil disobedience,” the board said.

The Church of the Brethren Mission and Ministry Board has issued a resolution on immigration that emphasizes the church’s longstanding commitment to civil disobedience when government policies are unjust or conflict with biblical teachings.

The board drew on decades of church statements to urge individuals, congregations, districts, and the denomination to support immigrant communities, speak out against policies that harm families, and engage in civil disobedience when necessary.

“Church of the Brethren history and tradition include radical discipleship, conscientious objection, and participation in civil disobedience,” the board said.

The seven-page resolution, titled “Walking Together: Immigration, Peacemaking, Conscience, and Supporting One’s Neighbors,” is linked as a download in pdf format at https://www.brethren.org/mmb/statements/

Love Feast is one of the most significant rituals the Church of the Brethren recognizes throughout the year. The Thursday before Easter, we gather to remember and re-enact the last meal that Jesus shared with his disciples before his crucifixion and resurrection. The service is split into four parts; a time of reflection and self-examination, footwashing/handwashing, a simple meal, and communion. As an Anabaptist community, we seek to follow Jesus in our ways of knowing, being, and doing and Love Feast is one of those moments where we are invited to do all three.

We'd like to invite you to join us for this special service and meal. We'll gather at 6:00 PM Thursday April 2nd in the Fellowship Hall of our meetinghouse. Feel free to sign up using the Google sheets link in the comments.

Happy Pastor Pyromania Tuesday! Have I (Stephen) been looking forward to this minute and a half since I started a year ago? Undoubtedly.

On a more serious note, we will be offering a blessing and imposition of ashes for Ash Wednesday, tomorrow from 7:30 am to 11:30 am. Pop in for a quick blessing before work or over lunch. Or if you have time, receive your blessing after exploring the self guided elements meditation.

Due to the expected winter weather this evening and tomorrow, in-person worship at Morgantown Church of the Brethren will be cancelled. We will still meet on Zoom at 10:30 for worship. This is shaping up to be a significant, if not historic, winter storm, so please be prepared and stay weather aware. The Zoom link for worship can be found on our website, in the Friday Roundup, and in the comments of this post.
