Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen!"
(Luke 24:1-6)

Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. (John 19: 28, 30)

When the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they took palm branches and went out to meet him, and cried out:

“Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,
the king of Israel.”
(John 12:12)

Enrich your prayer life this Lent! Follow this plan to read the entire Psalter according to the grouping of Psalms used in the Orthodox Church for millennia.

The 2023 Lenten Psalm Reading Guide is now available for download on the Diocesan Website which will enable the faithful to read the entire Book of Psalms during the Lenten Season.

The Book of Psalms (Psalter) has been called the “prayerbook of the Church.” In the Eastern Orthodox liturgical tradion, the Psalter is divided into 20 secons called kathisma; each kathisma is divided into three secons called stasis. In monasteries, all 150 Psalms are read each week during most of the year, and twice a week during the Great Fast!

The reading schedule of Psalms is designed for private devotional use. By reading two stasis on each Lenten weekday, one can read all 150 Psalms over the course of the six weeks of the Great Fast. The two sections of Psalms can either be read together, or one can be read in the morning and the other in the evening.

We are grateful to Fr. David Mastroberte for his efforts in providing this helpful guide to encourage the reading of the Psalter.

It may be downloaded in a printable PDF Format here:

"Great are You, O Lord, and marvelous are Your works, and no word can do justice to the praise of Your wonders!"
-Prayer for Great Blessing of Water (St. Sophronius of Jerusalem)

Thank you to everyone who came for our annual Blessing of the Open Waters! The service was attended by the faithful (and even some local wildlife) as we asked God to bless and sanctify the Mon River.

The 6th of January is the day we commemorate the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by John the Baptist (Matthew 3:13-17). This is the hymn sung in Orthodox Churches on this day! 🌊☦️💧

"Where God wills, the order of nature is overturned. For He willed, He had the powers. He descended. He saved. All things move in obedience to God.

Today, He who is, is born! And He who is becomes what He is not! For when He was God He became man while not relinquishing the Godhead that is His!" -St. John Chrysostom

From all of us at St. Mary's Orthodox Church, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
