First Baptist Church Morganton has supported a ministry to the deaf in the Morganton area since the early 1940s. There is a large population of deaf individuals in the Morganton community because of the location of the North Carolina School for the Deaf. The First Baptist Church Deaf Mission provides for the spiritual needs of these people and their families through a variety of program
s, activities, and outreach opportunities. A full-time minister to the deaf was called to lead this group in 1996. The First Baptist Deaf Mission currently shares space with the congregation of First Baptist Church at the West Union Street location. The Deaf Mission congregation operates much like a church, having its own budget and Deacons. Each member of the deaf congregation is encouraged to be involved in every ministry of the church. Members take leaderships roles in teaching, preaching, singing with signs, drama, outreach, and church administration. Sunday School classes and a worship service are offered each Sunday morning. Bible study is offered on Sunday evenings and on Wednesday evenings following Church Family Night dinner. Other activities include: local, state, and global mission activities, special group fellowships, leadership training, and Bible study opportunities for students at the North Carolina School for the Deaf, and annual Deaf Youth Retreat in May at Caraway Conference Center in Asheboro,NC.
