FCC's prayer calendar focuses on the landscape we call home. Today we pray for Christy Creek, a small stream that feeds into Triplett Creek and is an integral part of our watershed.
Human development and land use have altered the creek by reducing riparian borders and increasing bank erosion--individual choices that, over time, compound to affect the overall health of our vital waterways.
As we pray today, we lift up Christy Creek and all the hidden waters that nourish our community. For those joining us from beyond Eastern Kentucky, we invite you to pray for the waterways where you live--streams, creeks, rivers, and wetlands that sustain your corner of creation.

Today we pray for the bobcat--the stealthy, soft-pawed wildcat, quick and often hard to spot.
And yes, before you UK fans chime in, the bobcats were the original wildcats in Kentucky, roaming the hills long before Big Blue Nation fired up its first tailgate grill. 💙
In our prayers may the bobcat remind us of the wild neighbors who carefully evade our attention as they move through their lives. And may our care of creation help preserve the habitats where the bobcat and others find safe shelter.

Whether you call them lightning bugs, fireflies, or moon bugs, this humble creature delights children and adults alike with their summer evening light show. Lightning bugs are classified as Lampyridae, a family of insects within the beetle order Coleoptera, or winged beetles.
Nocturnal by nature, fireflies flourish in moist, sheltered habitats including meadows, leaf litter, and riparian zones. Decreased habitat and the spread of light pollution are environmental threats facing lightning bugs.
Today we hold in prayer these tiny glowing neighbors, creatures that still spark wonder and joy. May we protect the habitats they call home, so their light may continue to shine. ✨

We know what you're thinking--what exactly is an Allegheny Mountain Dusky Salamander? And why is this little neighbor showing up in our Season of Creation prayer calendar?! 😉
This tiny amphibian was suggested for today’s focus, giving us a chance to learn more about one of the quiet inhabitants of our Appalachian hills.
Although not listed as endangered in the U.S., this salamander is considered vulnerable by COSEWIC (Committee on the Status of Endangered Life in Canada). Its numbers are threatened by overlogging and industrial intrusion in the deciduous forests it calls home.

We've lost one of the great gifts from Kentucky to the world, Wendell Berry. As we celebrate his life and step into the Season of Creation, consider his poem, "How to Be a Poet," which includes these lines:

There are no unsacred places;
there are only sacred places
and desecrated places.

What rises up in you as you read those lines?
What desecrated places do you see in your neighborhood?
What can you do to restore their sacredness?

Today we enter the Season of Creation--joining Christians around the globe to focus our attention on the gift of the world, of creatures great and small. It's a time of celebration, lament, and renewal.
This month we'll share a prayer focus for each day, inspired by the wonders of our little neck of the woods here in Eastern Kentucky. Receive each prayer prompt as an invitation to notice the fragile and holy beauty around us.
We begin with Butterfly Milkweed--bright and joyous, an integral part of the watershed we call home.

Kudos to Liberty Christian Church in Hopkinsville, KY on joining the Green Chalice Ministry Network!

Congratulations to Liberty Christian Church in Hopkinsville, KY on becoming a Green Chalice Ministry!

We are thrilled to celebrate Liberty Christian Church as they live out their faith by caring for God's creation. After forming their Green Chalice team this spring and signing the Green Chalice Covenant, this congregation has made real changes to walk more gently on the earth.

Their efforts include:

Replacing all lightbulbs with LEDs
Installing an energy-efficient furnace and windows
Adding a programmable thermostat
Planting trees
Switching to compostable plates, cups, and bamboo cutlery
Bringing homemade tea to replace plastic bottles at dinners
Choosing aluminum cans over plastic bottles

Taken together, these steps reflect a thoughtful and wholehearted commitment to creation care. We are grateful for their witness to their congregation and the wider Hopkinsville community.

We look forward to all the new things you are doing to save our sacred planet and love our neighbors.
