Christmas: What’s it all about? Spending money I don’t have. Dealing with the stress of what to buy and who to buy for. Dealing with the crowds and the traffic. Where will we go for Christmas, who will we stay with, and when will we see who? Oh, Yeah, when are we getting a tree and when will we find time to decorate it and where is that Christmas tree stand? What’s it really all about? What’s the Point? Family and friends, children lighting up brighter than Christmas lights on the tree, people being slightly kinder than usual, lots of parties and lot of food and gaining weight. What’s the point? The insanity of it all. But the Reality of it all is the REMINDER! Christ has come, Christ will come again. Hope is out there. The power of it all is that Jesus, the promise, changed all of reality. He can change us too! God intervenes and offers hope and not just in December but all year long. Hallelujah!

The love of Christ is divine, true, and everlasting. Jesus loves everyone. He was born for us. The primary love of Christmas is given by God to us. We are the humble recipients. Praise God! Jesus Christ came and dwelt on earth as God in the flesh, exemplifying the love of God for us. God is with us and His presence is the key to the Christmas message. He brings love and compassion to all. He lived a sinless life and taught love to everyone. Love is the measure of our faith, the inspiration for our obedience, and the true altitude of our discipleship; receiving Jesus Christ and walking with Him. Because love is the great commandment, it ought to be at the center of everything we do. "This is the first and great commandment." (Matthew 22:38). Let us forever celebrate the love of Christmas as we shine the love of Jesus Christ to the entire world.

The beloved Son of God had his humble birth announced by angels to a group of shepherds who were tending their flocks of sheep outside of Bethlehem. Ironically, shepherds were held in such ill repute that their testimony was not allowed in a court of law. They were viewed as social outcasts, scoundrels, liars, and cheats. God chose to give those whom society declared as having nothing worthwhile to say the greatest news ever heard by human ears.

Through the angels God told them: "Do not be afraid; for see -- I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors." (Luke 2:10-14) Hallelujah!!!

"And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh." (Matthew 2:11)

When the wise men saw Jesus they bowed down, praised and glorified Him. They presented their best gifts and offerings unto Him. This shows how the sight of Christ leads hearts to worship and hands willing to give.

The Christmas season brings a little extra bounce in your step, a smile to your face, and just all around happiness. It is such an amazing time of the year. Christmas is more than opening gifts and eating a big dinner. So many people get caught up in the material things and forget the real reason to celebrate. Christmas day is all about Jesus Christ, a Savior coming to earth, born of a virgin birth for each of us. The greatest gift in the whole world! So let's truly celebrate it all year long.

“I’d rather not celebrate Christmas this year,” the hallow-eyed young woman stared at the snow at her feet. “I just don’t see the point in celebrating, without my family.” One swift moment on an icy road had left her without a husband and children. Sorrow had frozen her heart, but the despair had crushed her hope. Her story is only one amidst many during the Christmas season. Life has frowned on many during the year and hope has been shattered for many. Never could all the stories be told of how hope has been crushed, mangled, broken & shattered for so many.

Hope is crushed yet we hear the words from Paul in 1 Corinthians 13:13, “ and now these three remain: faith, hope and love.” Here we find HOPE included in as one of the ever-enduring gifts that God gives us for daily living. This is not some Christmas wish list (though those are fun sometimes) it is the real living vision of what the future can be for those who HOPE on Jesus Christ...for those who have Christmas in their hearts all year long.

A old pastor who touched many lives in a very significant way, lost an eye during the Second World War. He ended up being taken prisoner on Christmas Eve by German forces. Taken to a field hospital, it seemed as if nothing could ease the terrible pain in his eye, nor the empty loneliness he felt in his heart. It was Christmas Eve, but there was no peace on earth. He lay in the midst of wounded, dying men wondering if he would even see another Christmas Day.

And then a hand reached out from the cot next to his, and a wounded German soldier tried to say something to him. He could not understand the words, but suddenly he realized that the German was singing. In a voice filled with the anguish of his own pain, this German was singing the words, "Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright." Slowly those patients who could, began to sing as well, and before long the guards, the doctors and the nurses lifted up their voices in praise to the Christ Child, the Prince of Peace. It was one of those incredible moments when like Isaiah of old, we can glimpse a world where the power of God's love is greater than human hatred.

That message of hope and of peace is God's Christmas greeting to you and to me. It's a message of good news to a world often filled with bad news. More than that, it's a Christmas message that can change your life! That is surely worth celebrating all year long.

Let's not pretty up God's Christmas greeting so much that we miss the real reason why Christ came into our broken world. Christ came as the fulfillment of Isaiah's vision of a whole new order. Christ came to change both the hearts of humankind and the society in which we live. Christ came to call us to repentance and to turn us away from all the lesser gods who have usurped the place of the Living God on the throne of our hearts. That's the real hope that God has always offered to a world in the midst of despair. Isn't that worth celebrating all year long?

Christmas is a time for giving that reminds us of the Christmas story. Jesus received the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh; valuable items to honor the King. Let us give Him our offerings of love, worship, glory, honor, and praise. Not only during the Christmas season, but every season, may we always speak of the most valuable gift in the world, our Lord and Savior. Christ is the magic of Christmas that fills our hearts with joy. The most wonderful time of the year is CHRISTmas, so let's celebrate it everyday.

The Christmas season was especially hard for Frank Hinnant. Many years ago, Frank’s eighteen-month-old son, David, had died. Christmas was such a special time for children, so it always brought back painful memories of the Hinnant’s loss.

One December morning on his way to work, Frank passed by a nativity scene in a department store window. He tried not to notice the shining smiles on Mary’s and Joseph’s faces as they gazed down at baby Jesus. Next, Frank passed the Holy Innocents orphanage. Frank started thinking. Holy Innocents--wasn’t that the title given to all the babies who were murdered by King Herod’s men around the time of Jesus’ birth?

Suddenly, Frank realized that the Christmas story doesn’t end with the words “And they lived happily ever after.” It is a story of death and the lust for power and unjust social systems and innocence sacrificed. Frank visited the orphanage that afternoon, and it changed his life.

He described to his wife a dreary place full of sad children who were desperate for attention from a caring adult. That day, Frank donated a large amount of money to the Holy Innocents orphanage, and the directors planned to build on a new wing and name it in honor of David Hinnant, Frank’s deceased son. Frank’s wife marveled at the change in her husband. It was the first time in 22 years that he had mentioned his son’s name.

Life is hard. The story of Herod is a stark reminder of that truth. This is a scary world in many ways. But because of the Christ of Christmas, evil does not have the last word.

We live such sheltered lives. We cannot even imagine the way many people live in places like Africa, India, Cambodia, Haiti, etc. The scriptures are realistic about the human condition. The scriptures remind us, though, that evil never has the last word. Mary and Joseph are forced to flee, but they know it is only for a time. The promises of God concerning their Son are sure. God didn't forsake them and He will never forsake us. Hope...that is what the very first Christmas gave us and the gift is just as precious today.

We have all heard of the Christmas Carol, "The Twelve Days of Christmas." Years ago people were not allowed to practice their faith openly so they wrote "The Twelve Days of Christmas" so that the children could remember the Carol and what it meant. And here's how it goes.....
The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.
Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.
Three French hens stood for faith, hope, and love.
The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
The five golden rings recalled the Torah or law, the five books of the Old Testament.
The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.
Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit: Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.
The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.
Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.
The ten lords a-leaping were the Ten Commandments.
The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.
The Twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.
And now we all know how that strange song became a Christmas Carol...
