Today starts our reading plan, working through selected portions of the Old Testament together, seeing the whole story unfold towards Jesus. Our selection today is where it all began, Genesis 1-2.

Week 1: Beginnings
September 7-11, 2026

This week takes us through the opening chapters of Genesis: creation, sin, judgment, grace, and humanity’s repeated attempts to live apart from God. Don’t worry about answering every question these chapters raise. Read them as the beginning of the larger biblical story. Pay attention to what they show us about God, us, what has gone wrong, and what God is doing about it.

As You Read
PRAY – Ask God to help you hear what He wants to show you.

READ – Read slowly enough to notice what is actually there. Pay attention to context, repeated words, people, actions, questions, and anything that surprises you.

REFLECT – Ask:
• What does this show me about God?
• What does this show me about people, including me?
• Where does this fit into the larger story Scripture is telling?
• How does it help me understand why we need Jesus?

RESPOND – What should I do with what I’ve heard? Is there something to trust, confess, receive, change, remember, or obey?

PRAY – Talk to God about what you just read. Let His Word shape your prayer.

Can't wait to see you all this morning! Can't wait to worship our God together! Today at First Church we're wrapping up our series called "Open Book." But, the point of this series wasn't to get to the end, it was to get us ready for what's to come! Tomorrow we're going to begin reading through a large portion of the Old Testament together. Today, we'll learn how to read it well and see how even the Old Testament shows us Jesus if we know where to look. Coffee and donuts will be waiting on you, Nursery and Children's Church will be available, we'll share in Communion as a church family, and welcome home some people through Baptism. These long holiday weekends are great for family!

Excited for Sunday!
Lots going on this weekend at First Church. As we wrap up our "Open Book" series we launch a season of church-wide Bible reading through selected portions of the Old Testament.
