Prayer from Elder Douglas Morgan on Resurrection Sunday:
Gracious and sovereign God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit:
We draw near to You with humble hearts, mindful of the solemn path our Savior walked on the night He was betrayed. As we reflect upon Matthew 26:30–46, we see our Lord Jesus entering the shadows of Gethsemane, bearing the weight of sorrow that no human heart could fully comprehend. And yet, in that sacred hour, He submitted Himself wholly to Your will. “Not as I will, but as You will”—these words echo through the ages, calling us to surrender, trust, and obedience.
Father, we confess that we are not quick to watch and pray. Like the disciples, we grow weary, distracted, and unfaithful in moments that demand spiritual vigilance. We sleep when we should be seeking, we shrink when we should be standing. Forgive us for the weakness of our flesh and the dullness of our devotion. Teach us to abide in prayer, to draw strength from Your presence, and to stand firm in the hour of testing.
Yet we do not come to You in despair, for Your Word in Isaiah 53:5–6 reminds us of the great exchange accomplished through Christ. He was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; the chastisement that brought us peace was laid upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. Lord, we marvel at such love—that the sinless One would bear the guilt of the guilty, that the Shepherd would lay down His life for wandering sheep like us. We confess that we have gone astray, each to our own way, but we rejoice that You have laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
O Father, anchor our hearts in the truth so faithfully proclaimed in the ministry of Charles H. Spurgeon—that our hope is not in our strength, but in Christ alone. We are weak, but He is mighty. We are prone to wander, but He is steadfast to save. Let us not trust in fleeting resolve, but in the finished work of our Redeemer, who drank the cup of wrath so that we might drink the cup of salvation.
This morning as we celebrate the risen Christ, who all power in heaven and earth has been given, we say with confidence, as Isaiah 12:2 declares, “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid.” Lord, drive out our fears with the assurance of Your presence. When we face trials, remind us that Christ has already entered the deepest sorrow and emerged victorious. When we are tempted to despair, lift our eyes to the One who intercedes for us even now.
Strengthen Your church, we pray. Make us a people who watch and pray, who stand firm in the truth, and who cling to Christ in every circumstance. Empower pastors, missionaries, and all who proclaim the gospel, that they may declare with boldness the sufficiency of Christ’s atoning work. May many who are wandering be brought home to the Shepherd of their souls.
Search us, O God, and renew within us a steadfast spirit. Teach us to submit to Your will, to rest in Your salvation, and to walk in the confidence of Your redeeming grace.
And now, Father, we lift up Pastor Lori Barry to You as she prepares to bring Your Word this morning. Fill her with the Holy Spirit. Grant her clarity of mind, faithfulness to Scripture, and boldness in proclamation.
We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ, who was wounded for us, who prayed for us, and who saves us completely.
Amen
