Bucket List
Are you familiar with a bucket list? I imagine so but just in case; a bucket list is a list of items you want to accomplish before you “kick the bucket” or “pass away” for a clearer phrase. Many people have them and I’d say most people don’t ever complete them. One bucket list item I have had for a long time is to build a cedar strip canoe. I enjoy wood working and this has always been a goal of mine someday. I know the time involved in completing this endeavor makes this bucket list item a real long shot for me. I tend to be pretty busy working full time, studying for lessons, and spending time on a myriad of hobbies and interests. I’m comfortable knowing I’ll probably never get to the canoe. I can live with this. I’m more interested in our spiritual bucket lists for this blog. Do you have any? I recall a lesson from many years ago about setting big audacious goals from a former Sunday school teacher. I thought long and hard about this lesson and contemplated some goals I’d like to accomplish. I can tell you I was then and still am determined to accomplish something great for the Lord before my death. At the time I did not know exactly what that was, I just knew I would figure it out eventually. I worked toward several things but was never exactly sure if it was the big thing I desired to accomplish. Today I teach at a church I just decided to start. It something I considered the cost and decided to make it happen, and I just did it. From the time I decided to do it to actually having the first Sunday service was I doubt more than a month or two. Here’s the point. Are you just going with the flow or do you have any spiritual bucket list items? Do you have a sincere desire to accomplish something great for the Lord? I feel like every Christian should. I believe you should set goals in your Christian life just as you would in a secular setting. People set personal goals and business goals, so why not spiritual goals. I would challenge you to think about what, if anything, you are trying to accomplish for the Lord before you die. At least set some simple goals for your Christian life and hold yourself accountable to finish them. Once complete, challenge yourself again with something a little more audacious next time. This is planning growth for yourself and your spiritual life and being able to look back and see some things you planned to accomplish come to fruition. I’m not saying living a Christian life is unfruitful, but I am saying human nature is to seek our comfort. If you stay comfortable, you will not make it beyond what is easily attainable. Set at least one goal to accomplish in the next 30 days just for practice. Consider your spiritual bucket list and start proactively planning and moving towards accomplishing something big. It’s never too late to start. I tell our church that studying the Bible is a lifelong journey no matter how old or young you are when you start. Let’s complete a bucket list item!
