Today’s devotional: In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16)
After a long overnight red-eye flight to Germany, I was pretty tired. So when I arrived at the hotel, I decided to take a quick nap before my first business meeting. I closed the blackout curtains and settled into the bed.

But the blackout curtains had a pinhole in them through which a beam of light shone into the dark room and landed right on my pillow. The light shined in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

Just like the pinhole in a blackout curtain, even the smallest pinhole of love can shine into the darkest of situations. God’s love and light is that strong. Let God’s light shine through you today.

Today’s devotional: “Let each of you look not only to their own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:4).

Wallace Amos, best known for his “Famous Amos” chocolate chip cookies, went in and out of the food business. His story is remarkable: he achieved outstanding success (and sometimes had problems with it), but not predictably: his mother was illiterate, and he himself was late learning how to read.

How did that affect him? Here’s one way: in his later years he opened a small cookie shop in Hawaii and, according to the New York Times, “set aside an adjacent room stocked with children’s books. Every Saturday, he would take a seat in a rocking chair, surrounded by children, and read to them for hours.”

Isn’t that a wonderful image? I smile every time I think of it. He shared his love of reading – and the need for reading – by taking it to children in person. He shared, not just his concern, but himself.

Jesus did the same, and that’s one way he invites us to follow him.

Today’s devotional: But, God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong ―1 Corinthians 1: 27

Large battleships and luxury cruise ships have rudders that guide their travel. We don’t see them; they are under the water doing “their thing.” Their size is important and is calculated by a mathematical formula. Their shape is important; it too is determined by a geometric formula. And, their angle is important; there’s a formula for it too! Math and science ensure that the rudder is developed to do its job. Something unseen, but quite critical! People might be more drawn to the look of a ship and its accommodations. Why even think about the rudder?!

Some of the little, or “foolish”, or unseen things of this world might not get much attention; however, they perhaps are extremely important. A sluggish, fat caterpillar becomes a dainty butterfly! Ever hear this phrase, “Through the voice of a child?” At times, the young have wisdom beyond their years!

God perhaps is speaking to you through the most unimportant and unnoticeable circumstance. Listen, observe and be wise.

Today’s devotional: How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures (Psalm 104:24)

I met a woman who is a master gardener in a public garden. I asked her, “What is your favorite critter in the garden?” I expected her to say her favorite was a butterfly or a goldfinch or a fox.

I was surprised when she replied without hesitation, “A salamander!” She knew the garden so well that she even knew what critters lived under the rocks.

How well do we know the world around us? What things are we overlooking that might just be hiding under a rock or flying over our heads?

Wherever you find yourself today, take time to look up, and under, and around you. You might find something surprising!

Today’s devotional: “The steadfast mercies of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22-23).

Meg Grant, writing about Jamie Lee Curtis, says, “She once met someone who told her there were two kinds of people. One wakes up in the morning and says, ‘Good morning, God.’ The other wakes up and says, ‘Good God, it’s morning!’ She says she’s long been the former – all so she can wake up and do it over again.”

Sir William Osler, the famous physician, said that we ought to live in “day-tight compartments.” That’s what Curtis is talking about. Each morning is the start of a new day, with, as Dr. Peale says, a new set of facts. It’s a day waiting to be filled with love and enthusiasm for what we have to do, and if we ask God to help us fill it with good things, God will.

Today’s devotional: But unto you that fear My name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in His wings; and you shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall ― Malachi 4:2

We have a jelly-bean shaped lily pond in our yard. There is an area where the pond is 4 foot deep, and only about 1/2 to 1 foot along the periphery. In the fall, we often see Great Blue Herons spying out the pond, looking at our fish as their next tasty meal. They do not appear to be scared off by our heron decoy. No, they land near the pond and step into the water to catch a fish. Once, as I approached the pond, a heron flew off and I could see a slimy tail flapping next to his beak.

The average wingspan of an adult heron ranges from 65 - 79 inches (that’s 5.5 – 6.5 feet long)! When they fly overhead, I call them Pterodactyls because they look so enormous. Their wings will help them rise above the ground and fly in any direction with strength and ease…but no healing in their wings!

The Lord God Almighty heals!
