The Seasons of Advent and Christmas can be a terribly lonely and difficult time for those who have lost loved ones. Instead of joy and excitement, feelings of grief and heartache fill the holidays. The celebrations of the season can become a stark reminder to the bereaved of what has been lost. This service of the word and prayer is meant to provide a safe place to grieve and be comforted by God’s eternal love and light. It is often used on the night of the Winter Solstice, December 21st, the longest night of the year.

This year, the homilies that will accompany our Holden Evening Prayer liturgy will focus on the songs of salvation that appear in our advent readings. These will be the Song of Mary, the Song of Zachariah, and the Song of Simeon. All three songs the church sings in anticipation and fulfillment of the coming of the Christ Child.
