At our house we are planning for Christmas dinner. Like most of us, this meal is a bit over the top, more than what we usually have for ordinary days. Of course, the meal planning adds even more stress to an already stressful time of year, but we do it anyway. In the sermon on the mount, Jesus told his audience not to be anxious about food or clothing, but rather to seek the kingdom of God first. We don't have to look too far to see those less fortunate than we are, and their anxieties, I can only imagine, are far more serious than our frivolous stress over meal planning for one holiday. May the Lord help us to see the right priorities during this Christmas season.

As the house begins to shine with Christmas decorations, lights, and ornaments on the tree, memories of Christmas past flood my mind. I remember sitting next to Uncle Roger at the table as he placed those yucky sweet potatoes on my plate. Later the room would be littered with discarded wrapping paper as all of us children delighted in our new gifts. Then, once all had been cleaned, grandma and grandpa slowly danced in the living room, a tradition that started long before I was around to see it. These things, these memories, little did I know back then that they were forming me. In Paul's second letter, he reminds young Timothy that he should continue in what he has learned. His mentors, his experience, and the scriptures themselves would form and equip him to be a leader in the church. Christmas is a great time of year to examine how we have been influenced by these things.

"Bah! Humbug!" Ebenezer Scrooge, said when it came to all the Christmas festivities described in Charles Dicken's classic tale. It is easy to relate to the fictional character as we enter the advent season. Christmas has been swallowed up by commercialism, stress, anxiety, and added expenses. Yet, in the quiet glow of the Christmas tree on a cold winter's eve, we just might hear the distant voices of the angels singing, the prophets calling, as hope begins to swell. Peace on Earth and good will toward men! On this first Sunday of advent, let us focus on the Christ child and begin to experience the hope that this season brings.

There are a lot of things to be worried about these days: our government shutdown is now just about a month in the making, and benefits for those in need are waning, federal employees are working without pay, and meanwhile our nation's leaders would just as soon spit in the others' eye than do their jobs and work it out. Both parties are so hungry for power that the people's needs are being supplanted by the power-grab. Jeremiah spoke truth to power back in his days and was thrown into a cistern to die of hunger because of it. Sometimes, the truth hurts. Even the same, the prophetic call of the church is eternal and speaks beyond the kingdoms of this earth to the Kingdom of God that is both already and not yet. Let us speak that truth to the darkness.

Have you ever been lost? Back in the old days, before cell phones with GPS navigation systems, we used to have to stop and ask for directions-and if you remember, most of us men where known for refusing to do that. We would prefer to drive around looking for a familiar road sign than to stop and ask for help. But eventually, and with the persistence of our wives, we would surrender and ask someone to help us get back on our path. In Jeremiah 31, the prophet speaks words of comfort to those who were lost- a promise of God's presence. When God is with us, we are never truly lost.

You could be a lifeling student of the bible and never hear about a group of people called the Recabites. These were a nomadic people who were faithfully obedient to their clan's traditions. Jeremiah challenged the Jewish people to be more like the Recabites in their obedience to God and God's commands. We Christians also desire to obey God, but how are we doing? Obedience is easier said than done if we are honest. Let's explore this together this week.

In our ongoing study no Jeremiah, we hear a scathing message that he had for the people of God in chapter 7. With a dangerous enemy looming on the horizon, the people of Jerusalem felt confident that they would be OK since God was in the temple: so what could possibly go wrong? But Jeremiah reminded them that God prefers God's people live justly, take care of immigrants, orphans, and widows, and remain faithful to God alone and if they did these things first and foremost, God would be with them in the temple. Sometimes, we become so confident in who we are as God's people that we forget God's call to "love God with all we have and to love our neighbor as ourselves." And yes, along with the poor and needy, this call also includes the immigrant. How are we doing?

I have never been a very good gardener. I have tried over the years many times, but the garden always seems to get ahead of me as I work to balance gardening with all of life's other responsibilities. My garden always ended up as a weedy mess. In Jeremiah, God calls the prophet to a ministry of "plucking and planting." Certain "weeds" had grown among the covenant people of God and needed to be "plucked." At the same time, the people needed discipleship and teaching so that they could grow into all that God wanted them to be, and in this way he "planted." Our Christian walk can be a bit like a garden. In what ways does your walk need to be plucked or planted?
