Behind our church is Joy’s Garden in memory of Joy Brinson. Joy was a life-long member of the church. She left us way too young, and we will always remember her smiles and perpetual cheerfulness.

Next Sunday is a 5th Sunday, and we are having a joint service and fellowship dinner with Open Hearts United Methodist. Service will be in the First Presbyterian sanctuary, and dinner in the fellowship hall. Open Hearts is doing the main course, and we are doing the beverages and desserts. Bring a side if you wish!

This was found in a church history written in the 1960s by Miss Mary Budd Holmes, daughter of Rev. Holmes.

“During its long history, the church has sent only one son into the ministry. He, the Reverend William Denham, was the brother of Mrs. Elizabeth Denham Wallace.

His early training and a godly home began soon to manifest itself, for at the early age of eight years he received a Bible for reciting perfectly the Westminster shorter catechism. When about seven years old, after being reproved for some minor disobedience, he turned to his mother and said, “don’t you know that no minor man, since the fall, is able in this life perfectly to keep the commandments of God, but doth daily break them in thought, word, and deed?”

He united with the church and entered Davidson College when he was 16 years old. He graduated from Union Theological Seminary in New York in the spring of 1911. This seminary is now affiliated with Columbia University.

He did home mission work in South Georgia and then accepted a call to the Bethel Church in Virginia. He served for six years and developed the spiritual life of the people greatly.

While still a young man, William Denham became seriously ill in June 1917. He finally died May 27, 1918. One wonders if he died of the deadly flu that raged across the country about the same time.

He was laid to rest in the church yard at Bethel among the people he loved so well.”

In 1963, the church underwent a complete renovation program. The outside was painted and inside new red carpet was laid. They also had the pews and interior paneling refinished.

On that Palm Sunday, a new pulpit Bible was given in memory of Mrs. Laila Palmer Lindsley on the 100th anniversary of her birth by her daughters Mrs. Elizabeth Mulock, Miss Alice Lindsley, Mrs. Kathryn Eberhart, and Mrs. Morice Morgan.

Reverend Anderson Merrill Keith, who came in 1953, was quite the craftsman. In addition to his work on the stained glass window, his woodworking hobby would also be a decided asset to the building.

When the new organ was installed, it was necessary to have a grilled opening on either side of the chapel. Mr. Keith carved a set of panels to cover those grills. The panels are about 4 ft.² and offer the viewer a graphic interpretation of the symbols contained in the Presbyterian seal.

There are doves descending from heaven. The Ross represents Christ himself. The lamp represents the witnessing church, and the burning bush represents the indestructible church. The laurel wreath represents victory and the church triumphant.

Across the bottom of the seal, though not on the wood cut is a scroll, which carries the Latin inscription “Lux Lucet in Tenebris” which means the light shines in darkness.

First Presbyterian is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA), a denomination of approximately 1.2 million members, 8,813 congregations, and 18,400 ordained and active ministers.

Presbyterians trace their history to the 16th century and the protestant reformation. Our heritage, and much of what we believe, began with the French theologian John Calvin (1509-1564), whose writings crystallized much of the reformed thinking that came before him. From him in Geneva through Scotland and Ireland, it spread to America by 1640.

First Presbyterian was founded in 1842. While our denomination and congregation are steeped in tradition and history, you will find that we remain relevant for today.

Those who visit our church know us for our inspiring worship with beautiful music, the mission we undertake in our community, our dedication to growing in faith with understanding, and our devotion to all those in our church family.

The members of the church are part of a fellowship in which Christ’s spirit is present and through which He continues His work of redeeming love.

We hope you find the site helpful in getting to know more about us, and that it encourages you to worship with us this Sunday. We worship together every Sunday morning at 11 AM.
