The heartwarming sound of “America the Beautiful” filled the summer air on Tuesday afternoon. Students from the Pride of Prattville Marching Band moved in step across the field during a parade rehearsal under the scorching sun. Students spent hours in the heat this afternoon—and many others this spring—for a special reason; the band will be traveling to Philadelphia to participate in the “Salute to Independence Parade” on July 3rd to celebrate our nation’s semi quincentennial. Among these dedicated students are five members of the Montgomery Alabama Stake: Sydney Tuck, Jonas Tuck, Caroline Spears, Nicole Herrick, and Quintan Huffman.

Their performance in the parade is quite an honor; they were invited to participate without any application process. Both Band director Chris King and the students were shocked and delighted at the invitation, which came nearly two years ago. It will be the only marching band in the parade to represent the state of Alabama.

Sydney Tuck is looking forward to the trip. “I’m really glad that I get to go, even though it’s a little tough.

“Our country represents freedom, and to have us able to represent Alabama—it feels good! And being in the South, we love our country so much that we are just so excited about this opportunity…even our drums have flags on them!

“Being a part of this parade feels like a way to honor the freedom that we have and what we’ve had through the years. It’s a little sentimental to me because I am a girl, and I play drums! There are a lot of stereotypes out there, even with playing instruments—a lot of people don’t connect girls with playing drums. Being able to show my freedom in this country as a woman even in choosing the instrument I want, and to be able to show that I can do it, it just feels good!

“This experience is also a blessing because the songs we are playing are about God and our country, and—I love God! So, it’s really good.”

Watch for future reports of these students on this amazing trip to celebrate our nation’s 250th!

On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, The Mid-Alabama Coalition for the Homeless held their first Faith in Action Forum at the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Montgomery, Alabama. This forum aimed to unite faith and community organizations in better addressing the problem of homelessness in the mid-Alabama area. Several area churches and representatives from faith-based organizations were in attendance at the forum. From the Montgomery Alabama Stake, JustServe Specialist Sherena Rawls and Communication Director Maria Lawniczak attended the meeting.

Several local organization heads participated in a panel discussion about the services they offer, their observations about homelessness trends, and the pitfalls they recognize in efforts to lift the downtrodden. Many of the groups participating offer some form of shelter and require participation in programming to help those in their housing to become independent.

After the panel discussion, group breakout discussions were held to compile ideas surrounding specific prompts. There were many suggestions given through this detailed examination of the relationship between faith and community organization efforts. Sister Rawls and Sister Lawniczak took notes and discussed ways that our stake can better support and cooperate with local organization efforts to serve our struggling community members. One such suggestion was to coordinate organization needs with volunteers through the JustServe platform.

The Lord’s covenant people have always been instructed to lift the downtrodden. Elder Jeffrey R Holland taught, “The writer of Proverbs would make the matter piercingly clear: ‘He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker,’ and ‘whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor … shall [also] cry himself, but shall not be heard.’
In our day… the Lord commanded the members to ‘look to the poor and … needy, and administer to their relief that they shall not suffer.’ Note the imperative tone of that passage—'they shall not suffer.’ That is language God uses when He means business.

“Given the monumental challenge of addressing inequity in the world, what can one man or woman do? The Master Himself offered an answer. When, prior to His betrayal and Crucifixion, Mary anointed Jesus’s head with an expensive burial ointment, Judas Iscariot protested this extravagance and ‘murmured against her.’ Jesus said: ‘Why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work. … She hath done what she could.’ She hath done what she could! What a succinct formula!”

As we look for opportunities within the community to address the needs of our struggling neighbors, we will have the opportunity to do what we can.
