God's Grace Is a Free Gift

Jesus healed and forgave the paralyzed man even though the man did nothing to deserve healing or forgiveness.

Bible Basis

The crowd was immense. Jesus was in town, and he was healing people! But one man didn’t have the ability to get through the crowd. So his friends, by an act of their own grace, cut a hole in the roof and lowered him right in front of Jesus’ feet. The man knew Jesus would heal him, but he had no idea that he would be forgiven. In fact, he didn’t even know he needed to be forgiven. One thing he did know: He was just a man, lame and an outcast in his society. But Jesus looked at this man and gave him a gift: healing of the body and of the soul. For free! Use this lesson to help kids discover that they can do nothing to earn God’s grace because it’s completely free!

Discovery Point

God’s grace is a free gift.

Bible Focus

Luke 5:17-26

Key Verse

“God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God” (Ephesians 2:8).

Have Faith in Jesus' Power

Peter walked on water by faith in Jesus’ power. When he looked down and became afraid, he sank.

Bible Basis

After a long hard day, Jesus needed some solitude. So he sent his disciples in a boat to the other side of the lake. As the disciples sailed, a strong storm came up, and they had a hard time controlling their boat. Already scared by the storm and the danger they were in, the sight of a figure walking toward them on the water terrified them. Once they realized it was Jesus, Peter put his faith in Jesus’ power and walked on the water to meet Jesus…until he took his eyes from Jesus and saw the scene around him: crashing waves, howling wind, driving rain. Like Peter, your children are surrounded by scary and difficult circumstances that draw their attention. Use this lesson to encourage kids to keep their eyes on Jesus, trusting his power, even when other things cause them to worry.

Discovery Point

Have faith in Jesus’ power.

Bible Focus

Matthew 14:22-33

Key Verse

“Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. ‘You have so little faith,’ Jesus said. ‘Why did you doubt me?’ ” (Matthew 14:31).

Have Faith When You Stand Up for God

Stephen defended his faith even when it meant dying for it.
Bible Basis

Standing up for God can take lots of faith. But when you have faith, you want to stand up for God. In faith, Stephen stood up for God and even gave his life for God. With his last breath, Stephen asked God’s forgiveness for those who killed him—that’s incredible faith! Use this lesson to inspire kids to greater faith in God and willingness to stand up for God.

Discovery Point

Have faith when you stand up for God.

Bible Focus

Acts 6:8-15; 7:54-60

Key Verse

“For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile” (Romans 1:16).

Have Faith When You Don't Have Much

The widow who gave only two small coins didn’t have much, but she knew she could trust God with what she had.
Bible Basis

In too many churches, kids are not taken seriously. It’s not that they’re ignored—you’re preparing a Bible lesson for children, so clearly your church doesn’t ignore kids—but they aren’t taken seriously.

Why? Because like the poor widow who dropped two tiny coins in the Temple collection box, children don’t actually contribute much to a church’s ministry. They’re ministry consumers—not the board members, teachers, and missionaries who make things happen. At least, that’s how it appears.

Use this lesson to help your children discover what adults in your church need to know, too: that when children trust God with what they have, he multiplies it. A little becomes a lot…and can change the world.

Discovery Point

Have faith when you don’t have much.

Bible Focus

Luke 21:1-4

Key Verse
“Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins” (Luke 21:2).

Have Faith When You Need Help

God provided for the Israelites in the desert. By faith, we can know he will care for us, too.

Bible Basis

It’s always amazing to realize that the Israelites took 40 years to make a journey that could have been made in about two weeks. This stubborn, stiff-necked people had many lessons to learn before they would be ready to enter the Promised Land. God, in his infinite patience and wisdom, never gave up on the Israelites but continued to provide for them and guide them, even though they continued to disappoint him. Use this session to help kids understand that their journey won’t always be an easy one but they can always trust God to be with them along the way.

Discovery Point

Have faith when you need help.

Bible Focus

Exodus 16:11-21

Key Verse

“I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread” (Psalm 37:25).

Have Faith When You Don't Know Everything
Abraham took his son to offer to God, knowing that God would provide the answer.

Bible Basis

God had told Abraham he would make him into a great nation, but for years upon years, Abraham and his wife, Sarah, had no children. When God finally provided a son for Abraham, God told Abraham to sacrifice his son. Sounds like a crazy request, and it sounds even crazier that Abraham would go through with it. But in his faith, Abraham obeyed God and prepared to sacrifice his only son. God never intended Abraham to kill Isaac; his purpose was to test Abraham’s faith. Abraham’s faith is a testament to us that we can trust God even when we don’t know what’s going to happen, even when it looks as if the results will mess things up.

Discovery Point

Have faith when you don’t know everything.

Bible Focus

Genesis 22:1-18

Key Verse

“It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him” (Hebrews 11:17).
