The Women’s Ministry theme for the new year is “even though . . . I will.”
When David wrote the 23rd Psalm, he included the words that are so familiar to many of us – “even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil….” There are scholars who tell us that the valley of the shadow of death is not only a metaphor for life’s difficulties, but it is also a real place. The Valley of the Shadow of Death is in the Judean Desert between Jerusalem and Jericho. It is a seventeen-mile-long gorge that is extremely steep, rocky, and dangerous. If you go there, you might just be in the original “rock and a hard place.”

Even though David found himself in a pretty bad situation, he said he was not afraid. He trusted God and drew strength in knowing that God already had a plan. The same goes for us. Whatever our “valley” might be, God is already there, already in charge of our future. We don’t have to worry; we have to trust – not easy, but the only way we might find peace.

The Bible has so many “even though” examples – want a few?
• Even though Abraham and Sarah were far too old to expect children, God provided them anyway.
• Even though Job lost his family, health, and wealth, he never lost his faith in God.
• Even though young David was a small and unlikely warrior – he trusted God to help him slay a giant.
• Even though five loaves of bread and two fish couldn’t possibly feed a crowd, 5,000 men and their families were fed.
• Even though Noah might have felt a bit odd building an ark on dry land, he was obedient to God and he and his family were saved.
• Even though Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego found themselves in the fiery furnace, they refused to bow down to a false god and God saved them.

“Even though” simply means that we trust God to be God. “Even though” bad things may happen, it does not change who God is. Sometimes we fall into the “what if” trap. Worrying about “what if” is not the same as the “even though” attitude. “What if” is about fear and anxiety and worry. “Even though” is about trust and faith and knowing that God is still in control.

You will have your own “even though” times. And when they come, you get to make a choice in handling them. Never forget that God created you, loves you, wants what is best for you. Trust Him even though …
