The Canaan Hill Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1888 under the leadership of Rev. Bibb from the New Hope Baptist Church, Hunter Station. The first building was established on Washington Ferry Road, located behind the north section of presently known Maxwell Air Force Base. Nunn as pastor, the Canaan Hill Baptist Church was dismantled and reassembled at 329 Air Base Boulevard. Several pa

storates served as leaders of Canaan Hill between 1943 and 1987 until Rev. Ossie T. Brown, Jr., answered the call in 1988. On July 2, 2000, under the leadership of Rev. Brown, Canaan Hill moved to its present location on Ray Thorington Road and embraced the name The Sanctuary—an asylum, a safe haven, a place to find refuge in God. The Sanctuary, Historically Canaan Hill Missionary Baptist Church, will continue to emphasize the central Christian doctrine of the One True God.
