On Sunday, May 31st, leaders, alumni and friends of Birmingham-Southern College gathered for A Service of Thanksgiving to honor the legacy of the college. A ceremonial handoff of a vessel of soil occurred and was presented by Rev. Keith Thompson, BSC Trustee, to Captain Matthew T. Brown, Prospective Commander of the United States Coast Guard Force Readiness Command. The service was held at Trinity UMC in Homewood, AL, under the leadership of Rev. Brian Erickson.

Several months ago the announcement was made that the BSC property was sold to the US Coast Guard and the acquisition was officially closed upon on April 30, 2026. The new training facility will be named, “U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Birmingham-Southern” to honor the 168-year legacy of the college.

In addition to several scripture passages, heartfelt and emotional remarks were offered by President Daniel B. Coleman, who served as the 16th and final President of the college. Bishop Jonathan Holston also offered encouraging words and presented a resolution to President Coleman that was approved by the voting body at the North Alabama Annual Conference, held several days prior.

Pictured are: Captain Matthew Brown, Captain Jennifer D. Bowden, 13th Chaplain of the Coast Guard and an elder in the North Georgia Annual Conference, Bishop Holston and President Coleman.

We give thanks for the lasting impact of Birmingham-Southern College. Forward, Ever-Always.

How exciting for Pt. Washington UMC. Last week, the VPK Class of 2026 made history as the first graduating class at The Preschool at Point Washington to celebrate with a chapel bell ringing and a joyful cap toss — the beginning of a tradition they hope will carry on for years to come. As a ministry of Point Washington United Methodist Church, it was incredibly special to honor this milestone together in the chapel, a place already filled with treasured memories of prayers, worship, and songs shared throughout the school year.

Today, the VPK Class of 2026 became the very first graduating class at The Preschool at Point Washington to ring the chapel bell and celebrate with a cap toss — a new tradition we hope will continue for many years to come. As a ministry of Point Washington United Methodist Church, it feels especially meaningful to celebrate this milestone together at the chapel, where so many prayers, songs, and moments of worship have already been shared throughout the year. We are so very lucky, as the faith foundation we have built here, doesn’t have to stop when they Graduate. There are loving, guiding hands, ready to continue building with excitement! Ms. Kelly Yoakum, the Point Washington Children’s Director, is ready meet your hearts and welcome any who want to join, to learn more about the POWASH program❤️
Congratulations to our VPK Class of 2026 Graduates! 🎓

United Women in Faith from the Alabama-West Florida Conference had a meaningful and inspiring time at the 2026 Assembly held May 15-17 in Indianapolis, IN.

The group celebrated Cynthia Brown’s consecration as a Deaconess as part of the class of 22 new deaconesses and home missioners, with Clara Ester assisting in the consecration service.

They also also celebrated Debbie Bracewell announcing that the SEJ Quadrennial Meeting will be held in Mobile in 2028. Zan Jones shared an impactful presentation on Justice Initiatives, while Eva Ellenburg and Rev. Kelli Hitchman-Craig represented Candler School of Theology and COSROW as exhibitors.

Katy Wrona served as one of four event hosts and led three “Make Mission Happen” segments throughout the weekend, while also reconnecting with current and former missionaries through Global Ministries.

What a wonderful weekend of worship, mission, leadership, and connection.

Bishop Jonathan Holston shared a message this morning related to voting rights and representation.

"As Christians, we cannot be indifferent when any group of people believes their voice is being diminished or their participation weakened. The Church has a holy responsibility to stand alongside those whose rights and dignity are threatened. Silence in the face of injustice has never been the calling of the Body of Christ."
