Pentecost is often called the “birthday of the Church,” when the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the apostles as promised by Christ (Acts 2). Before His ascension, Jesus told His disciples that He would send them the Helper — the Holy Spirit — who would teach them, strengthen them, and bear witness to Him.

Through the preaching of God’s Word, people from many nations heard the Gospel in their own language and were brought to faith in Jesus.

From an LCMS perspective, Pentecost reminds us that the Holy Spirit still works today through the Word and Sacraments to create and strengthen faith, gather believers into Christ’s Church, and send His people into the world with the Good News of salvation.

“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit...” – Acts 2:4
