Some people are hungry and thirsty for liturgical worship. Others think it dry, dull and rote and want nothing to do with it.

When I was at the Vineyard, I knew people who were tired of stale, dry, non-life-transforming liturgy and were therefore flocking to Vineyard churches because of the outstanding worship music and healing presence of God. But in the last 35 years, those people have become disillusioned with contemporary Christian worship.

My point: Both styles can let people down. For instance, if liturgical worship is all that great, how do we explain the rampant apostasy in large swaths of the liturgical church world? On the other hand, how is it that evangelical churchgoers can listen to sermons for decades and still be immature, judgmental and sinful people?

For us liturgical types, we need to embrace the spiritual practice of liturgy so that liturgy becomes a practice for life. This will work in any setting: Baptist, Calvary Chapel, Presbyterian or Anglican churches. The key idea is that liturgy should not just shape our thinking but form our lives. Our work of worship empowers ethical work in society. Our work is part of a holy and spirit-filled life, and dedicating it to God gives dignity to even repetitive and menial work. Worship needs to become “an orientation to life.”
