The Episcopal Missionary Church

The Episcopal Missionary Church Defending the Historic Faith Episcopal Missionary what? O.K., so just what is The Episcopal Missionary Church anyway? We welcome that.

Maybe the best way to answer this question is word by word. We are “Episcopal” because we are governed by our chief shepherd, the bishop. The word bishop comes from the Greek word “episcopos” from which we get the word “episcopal”. Not only do we have bishops, but in Episcopal Missionary Churches you will find priests and in many of our churches deacons. This threefold order of ministry has a ric

h history and dates back to New Testament times. We are “Missionary” because that’s a big part of what being a Christian is. In some cases it means going half way around the world to take the Gospel to a group of people who have never heard it and translate Bibles and Prayer Books into their language. It can also mean staying right where you are, praying, giving and working to support those who have gone into the traditional mission field. The word missionary can also mean sharing the love of Christ with your next door neighbor who has never been to your church or any church. To us, “missionary” basically means reaching out to all those who are without a saving relationship with Jesus Christ whether they be across the street or across the world. We are “Church” because we are a body of Christian believers who gather as one from differing backgrounds to form this part of the Family of God, the Body of Christ, The Church. Members of The Episcopal Missionary Church come from many backgrounds and age groups but all worship and seek to grow in the same Lord Jesus. We believe the Bible to be the Word of God, and when we come together as a worshipping body, as church, we worship together using the forms and prayers from a book called The Book of Common Prayer, 1928 Edition. The Book of Common Prayer provides us with both structure and liberation. Much of that structure, the prayers, dates back to the early church, so we pray with Christians down through the centuries. In the order of Holy Communion in the Book of Common Prayer we find both the extent of our sin and need of forgiveness as well as finding God’s plan of salvation made clear for us. Is it any wonder that the traditional name of the Communion service is “Eucharist” which means “thanksgiving”. Now that you know a little more about us, we would love to have you come and join us as we give thanks for all for all God’s blessings in our lives at an Episcopal Missionary Church near you. If you’re still a doubter, come and ask us some more questions.

Almost all of our Episcopal Missionary Churches are celebrating Epiphany a bit early. Some of them will have a service on Tuesday. See William Millsaps page for more details.

It is proper to keep Holy Innocents Day on Sunday, December 28th. We will do this at Christ Church Monteagle. In our own time we have had a slaughter of lives in the womb. We have also seen children robbed of their innocence by being exposed to behavior of “Drag Queens” and other perversions. We have modern day Herods and we can be bold and stand against them and for the little ones.

The Episcopal Missionary Church wishes you a Merry Christmas and many blessings for the Twelve Days.

We were at the First GAFCON in 2008 and signed the Jerusalem Statement.

So when people ask where does The Episcopal Missionary Church stand on the present news we say that we have not changed our well known Faith and Practice. We were established as a Jurisdiction in 1992.

The Rt. Rev. A. Donald Davies had served as Bishop of Dallas. When the Diocese went through the process of founding a new Diocese. The Diocesan Bishop is always allowed to choose which of the two dioceses he wishes to serve. Bishop Davies had already had a home nearer Ft. Worth and he chose to be the first of that diocese.

After a little while, Bishop Davies wanted to slow down. He was appointed Bishop of the Episcopal Churches of Europe by then Presiding Bishop John Allin.

The Rev. Clarence Pope was elected second bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of Ft. Worth.

During the 1970’ s and even more during the 1980’s The Episcopal Church changed its liturgical practice. it embraced the Ordination of Women to the priesthood and to the episcopate.

Since the 1960’s there had been
small separations, as a few churches sought to leave but usually the diocese and the bishop of the diocese retained the Real Estate.

In 1976 there was a large meeting at St.Louis and four new bishops were elected. However, Bishop
Davies and many other bishops believed that the Episcopal Church could be restored.

If you search Utube you can find sermons and statements from Forward in Faith and The Evangelical and Catholic movement. There were news magazines that tracked the changes and tried to warn the wider church.

Bishop Clarence Haden of Northern Californica was
one of the greatest orators.

Bishop Charles Francis Boynton was having some heart trouble, but maintained contact with his close friends. Later he would formally join The Episcopal Missionary Church.,

There were Continuing Churches formed, but sadly the first bishops did not stay together. In fact, there were often lawsuits.

Bishop Davies believed that several other bishops and many
clergy and laity would follow him in a restored Episcopal Church.

Christ Church Monteagle had been founded in 1987. It was affiliated with The American Episcopal Church, Inc.

Later, there were numerous little jurisdictions formed. Bishop Davies and Bishop Willliam Millsaps had kept in close touch and Bishop Millsaps had pleaded with Bishop Davies to make a fresh start.

Bishop Davies had used a lot of his resources to buy a closed college in Aiken, South Carolina.
There was already a small group of traditionalist Anglicans in the area.

While they gave lip service to Bishop Davies they had stayed in touch with clergy who were not willing to submit to a new Constitution and Canons.

Bishop Davies called a meeting Texas in November of 1992 and The Episcopal Missionary Church was formed.

Christ Church Monteagle had bought land. But the congregation was still meeting in The Monteagle Seventh Day Church.

A Parish Meeting was held in November of 1994 and voted unanimously to accept Bishop Davies declaration to make Monteagle the headquarters and cathedral of The Episcopal Missionary Church, Inc.
