“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,* and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” Matthew 11:28–30

Having actually done an exegesis on this passage, there is a lot to unpack. This is unique to Matthew. The image of a yoke, to the listeners in the first century, would be quite familiar. Not so much to modern Americans. Yes, we can visualize a yoke. But there are several significant details that elude us. First, a yoke would have been carved by a carpenter to fit the beast precisely. It would not hurt the beast unless it strained against the straight and narrow, But maybe more importantly, a yoke was not carried by only one beast. It is always paired. Soe, when Jesus offers us His yoke, He is offering to carry it along with us. Jesus wishes to share your burdens. Are you willing to let Him?

“For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
and his ears turned to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against evildoers.”
Now who is going to harm you if you are enthusiastic for what is good? 1 Peter 3:12–13

Actually, it may be more appropriate to say that the face of the evildoer is against the Lord. God never turns from us or leaves us on our own. Even if we choose to sin and separate ourselves from Him, God is always there if we just turn back. It is not promised to us that this life will be all roses but God will always be there for us if we choose to seek His help.

Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him. John 14:21

A few verses before this, Jesus says that whoever loves Him will keep His commandments and He will send the Advocate, the Holy Spirit. So Jesus is qualifying how we love by what we do about it. Saying we love someone carries little meaning if we do not take action on their behalf. Love is an action and not just an emotion. If you truly love God as you profess to do in your proclamation of faith, you have to do something about it. This type of love, actually all types of love, is a covenant. That implies that there is give and take but the giving on one side is greater than the other. This may shift back and forth in a human relationship but in a relationship with God, we are always receiving more than we give. But we still give. Make your profession of faith an action by backing it up with your love.

I give you a new commandment:* love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:34–35

This si the first time during the Last Supper that Jesus commands His disciples to love. He reiterates that in Chapter 15. The key is really the phrase “as I have loved you.” The disciples do not understand what that means at this moment. They will shortly. It is not a fuzzy, feel good type of love. It is a choice, an action, to go beyond what might be expected out of love for another. That is the basis of a good marriage. That is the goal of a Christian life.

I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us. Romans 8:18

Let us put this into perspective. Paul is talking about the sufferings in his time. Those included for him personally – being arrested, being flogged, and finally, being martyred. How does that compare to the difficulty of your walk as a Christian. So people do not like what you say. So maybe people make fun of you because of your beliefs. Even what Paul went through cannot compare to the glory of the eternal Kingdom of God. Do not become discouraged.

Thank you to everyone who joined us this weekend for The Way Retreat at St. Bernadette! We are grateful to Dr. Michel Therrien and the Preambula Group for leading us through a beautiful weekend of prayer, reflection, and spiritual renewal.

We have to step out of our worldly passions. They draw our attention away from the Lord. It takes disciple but we will not be successful in the long-term unless we rely on the grace of God. Only that will give ius the strength to avoid the allurements of the world and focus on God.

Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish is pleased to announce a new monthly Mass in Spanish at St. Bernadette Church, beginning Sunday, September 13th.

Mass will be celebrated on the second Sunday of each month at 1:30 p.m.

We invite our Spanish-speaking parishioners, families, friends, and neighbors to join us and help spread the word!
