Don't Let Grace Become Ordinary

Hebrews 2:3–4

Some of the most extraordinary things in our lives can eventually become ordinary simply because they're familiar. A beautiful view becomes the scenery we drive past every day. A relationship we once prayed for can become someone we take for granted. A blessing that once overwhelmed us can slowly become something we expect.

The same thing can happen with grace.

Hebrews asks a piercing question: “How will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?” The danger isn't only rejecting Jesus. We can also neglect what He's done by allowing it to become so familiar that it no longer moves us.

Think about what we call salvation. God didn't wait for us to become good enough. Jesus entered our brokenness, carried our sin, gave His life, defeated death, and opened the way for us to be reconciled to God.

And we contributed nothing that could earn it.

That's grace.

Yet if we're not careful, the cross can become another symbol we see, salvation another church word we use, and forgiveness something we assume rather than treasure.

Today, remember what Jesus has actually done for you. Don't rush past it because you've heard the story before.

The gospel isn't old news.

It's still the greatest news you've ever received.

Reflect: Have I become so familiar with God's grace that I've stopped being amazed by it?

Pray: Jesus, don't let Your grace become ordinary to me. Remind me what You rescued me from and what Your sacrifice has given me. Restore my gratitude and wonder for such a great salvation. Amen.

📖 JESUS IS > GREATER | DAY 9

Yesterday Hebrews warned us:

Don't drift.

Today comes the question that follows:

“How will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?”
Hebrews 2:3

Notice the word neglect.

Hebrews isn't only warning about outright rejection of Jesus. There's another danger: becoming so familiar with what He has done that we begin treating it as ordinary.

Grace becomes familiar.

Forgiveness becomes familiar.

The cross becomes familiar.

Salvation becomes something we know about rather than something that still leaves us amazed.

But there is nothing ordinary about what Jesus has done.

We were separated from God, and Jesus made a way back.

We could not save ourselves, so He came for us.

That's why Hebrews calls it “such a great salvation.”

Today, don't rush past the gift because you've heard the story before.

Stop.

Remember.

And let yourself be amazed again.

The Danger of Drifting

Hebrews 2:1–2

Drifting is dangerous because it rarely feels dangerous while it's happening. A boat doesn't need to be moving quickly to end up far from where it started. It simply needs a current and no anchor.

Hebrews 2 begins with a warning: “We must pay attention all the more to what we have heard, so that we will not drift away.”

Notice that Scripture doesn't say we must work harder to make Jesus love us. Chapter 1 has already established who Jesus is. He is the Son, Creator, Sustainer, Savior, and King. Now Hebrews says that because Jesus is greater, what He has revealed deserves our full attention.

Spiritual drifting often happens quietly. We get busy. Prayer becomes less frequent. Scripture gets pushed aside. Something else begins receiving our attention. Nothing feels dramatically different, but little by little our hearts move.

The answer isn't guilt. It's awareness.

Stop long enough to notice where the current has been carrying you.

Maybe you've drifted toward worry. Maybe comfort. Control. Approval. Busyness. Maybe you've simply become distracted.

Whatever it is, you don't have to stay there.

Turn your attention back toward Jesus.

Open His Word. Talk to Him. Listen. Obey the next thing He's asking of you.

You don't have to fix everything today.

Just stop drifting.

Reflect: Where have I slowly drifted from Jesus without realizing it?

Pray: Jesus, show me where I've allowed my attention and heart to drift. Help me recognize the currents pulling me away from You and intentionally turn back toward You. Keep my heart anchored in Your truth. Amen.

You don't have to be perfect. Just pay attention to your direction.

📖 JESUS IS > GREATER | DAY 8

Today we begin Hebrews 2, and the chapter opens with a warning we probably all need:

Pay attention so you don't drift.

Hebrews 2:1 tells us to pay careful attention to what we've heard so that we don't drift away.

That's interesting because drifting usually isn't dramatic.

You don't wake up one morning and decide, “Today's the day I'm going to slowly move away from God.”

It happens quietly.

A missed day becomes a week.

Prayer becomes something we only reach for when there's a problem.

Busyness crowds out time with God.

Other voices get louder.

Little compromises become comfortable.

And before long, we look up and realize we've moved farther than we intended.

That's why Hebrews says:

PAY ATTENTION.

Following Jesus requires intentionality, not because we're trying to earn His love, but because there are always currents pulling for our attention.

So today, take a moment and check your position.

Am I moving closer to Jesus, or have I slowly begun to drift?

If you've drifted, don't waste today beating yourself up over how far you've moved.

Turn toward Jesus.

The goal isn't perfection.

It's direction.

Don't Miss the King

Hebrews 1:13–14

Hebrews 1 has spent an entire chapter lifting our eyes toward Jesus. We've seen Him as Creator, Sustainer, Savior, King, and the One worthy of worship. Now the chapter closes with one final comparison: Jesus sits at the right hand of God, while angels are sent to serve.

Angels have an important purpose, but they are not the point. Jesus is.

That distinction reaches beyond angels. We can become so interested in the things surrounding Jesus that we accidentally give them more attention than Jesus Himself. We can focus on experiences, answers, blessings, church activity, theology, spiritual gifts, or what God might do next while slowly losing our wonder for who He is.

Hebrews keeps bringing us back to the center.

Look at Jesus.

The Christian life isn't ultimately about collecting spiritual experiences or understanding every mystery. It's about knowing and following Christ.

And notice where Jesus is in today's passage: seated at God's right hand. He isn't fighting for authority. He isn't worried about whether His kingdom will survive. He reigns.

So as we finish Hebrews 1, perhaps the best response is simply to put Jesus back at the center.

Before asking what He can give you, remember who He is. Before searching for another answer, look again at the One who already reigns.

Don't become so distracted by everything surrounding the King that you miss the King Himself.

Reflect: Has something about my faith become more important to me than Jesus Himself?

Pray: Jesus, bring my attention back to You. When I become distracted by everything surrounding my faith, remind me that You are the center of it all. Help me know You, trust You, and keep my eyes fixed on You. You are greater. Amen.

📖 JESUS IS > GREATER | DAY 7

Today we finish Hebrews 1.

All week, Hebrews has been showing us who Jesus is. And in the final verses, the comparison between Jesus and the angels becomes crystal clear.

God never invited an angel to sit at His right hand.

Why?

Because angels are servants.

Jesus is the Son and reigning King.

Hebrews 1:14 even reminds us that angels are ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation. They have an important God-given purpose, but they are not the focus.

Jesus is.

And maybe that's a reminder we need too.

It's easy to become fascinated with everything surrounding our faith while losing sight of the One our faith is actually about.

Hebrews keeps redirecting our attention:

Look at Jesus.

He created.

He sustains.

He saves.

He reigns.

He is worshiped.

And He is seated at the right hand of God.

As we finish Chapter 1, ask yourself:

Has anything become bigger in my attention than Jesus Himself?

Don't settle for the things surrounding Him.

Keep your eyes on Jesus.

Tomorrow we begin Hebrews 2.

When Everything Else Changes

Hebrews 1:10–12

Change can be exciting when we choose it. It's much harder when we don't.

A plan changes. A relationship shifts. A job ends. A door closes. A season we thought would last suddenly doesn't. Even good things eventually change, and sometimes we're left trying to find our footing in a life that looks different than we expected.

Hebrews 1:10–12 gives us something steady to hold onto. The writer points all the way back to creation and reminds us that Jesus was there at the beginning. The earth and heavens are His handiwork. Yet even creation will eventually change.

Jesus won't.

Hebrews says everything else may wear out and be changed, but of Jesus it says, “You are the same.”

We sometimes build our security around things that were never meant to be permanent. We depend on circumstances staying predictable, people never disappointing us, plans working out, or life continuing the way we expected.

Then something moves.

And suddenly we feel like everything is moving.

But underneath all that change is something immovable: Jesus Christ remains.

The same Jesus who was faithful yesterday hasn't become less faithful today. His character hasn't shifted. His promises haven't weakened. His authority hasn't diminished.

So when life changes, you don't have to anchor yourself to something else that might change tomorrow.

Anchor yourself to Someone who won't.

Reflect: What changing circumstance have I allowed to determine my sense of security?

Pray: Jesus, when everything around me feels uncertain, remind me that You remain. Help me stop building my security on things that can change and teach me to trust Your unchanging character. Whatever tomorrow brings, help me remember that You will still be You. Amen.

📖 JESUS IS > GREATER | DAY 6

Everything changes.

Seasons change. Plans change. Circumstances change. People change. We change.

Today, Hebrews points us toward the One who doesn't.

In Hebrews 1:10–12, we're reminded that Jesus was there at creation. The earth and heavens are His handiwork, and while creation itself will one day change, He remains.

That matters when life feels anything but steady.

We often search for security in things that were never designed to carry the weight of it. Jobs, relationships, finances, plans, routines, even our own ability to hold everything together can change in an instant.

But Jesus doesn't.

Yesterday He was faithful.
Today He is faithful.
Tomorrow He will still be faithful.

The things around you may change without warning, but the One holding you hasn't changed at all.

What have I been depending on for stability that can change, instead of trusting the One who cannot?
