In John 7, Jesus goes late to the feast of tabernacles, for He knows that there are those who already wish to seize Him and put Him to death. By the middle of the feast, he goes to the temple to teach. Some grumble because He has no formal training. Jesus assures them that his words come from the Father while pointing out that they miss the true application of teaching when they teach. His words are not lost upon the crowd - they know that He speaks boldly and wonder why He is not taken and arrested. Jesus would invite them to come to Him. Some believe, but others raise arguments against Him as they continue to stumble about in their unbelief. The invitation of the gospel is that all who believe in Jesus will have eternal life. There are but two ways to respond - to respond in faith, believing in His words, or to reject Him, and continue in unbelief. The only way to Heaven is through faith in Christ.

John states that he writes his gospel so "that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ." Following the healing of the lame man at the pool, the religious authorities are incensed that he healed a man and then told him to pick up his bed on the sabbath. Jesus does not bother to educate them on the interpretation of the fourth commandment, but rather equate His activity with that of the Father. They realize that He is making Himself equal to God and seek from then on to kill Him. The book of the law required that only in the mouth of 2 or 3 witness should a matter be established. Jesus proceeds to defend His claim by providing four witness that attest to the fact that He was the Messiah, the Son of God. The problem with so many then, as is a problem now, is that they turned a deaf ear and a blind eye to these witnesses. Jesus warns them that one day they stand before Him in judgement. So will we - let us do so believing. "He that believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live."

This Sunday marks a holiday observance of some sort by many people across the world - the observance of Easter. Many church denominations observe a "Holy Week" - full of various traditions. For the faithful, each Lord's day Sunday is a remembrance and celebration of the resurrection. This coming Lord's Day will bring us to John 2, where Christ fashion a whip and drives out the animals and vendors and flips over the tables of commerce. The issue was two-fold - they were not honoring the worship of God in the temple and as they were set up in the courtyard of the Gentiles, they were forbidding or impeding the worship of the Gentiles. When challenged and asked for a sign of His authority, He said that the sign would be that if they destroyed His temple (meaning His body) - He would on the third day raise it up. On the third day Jesus rose from the dead, just as He said He would. And it through the knowledge of the resurrection that we receive power, hope, and exceeding joy. " Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” John 11
