God’s Word: Food and Drink for the Soul
Robert Alexander

As human beings there are three things necessary for us to live physically: 1) Air—without it we cannot receive the oxygen needed to function, 2) Water—because our bodies are made up of water, it therefore follows that when we lose it we need to replenish it, without water we would die of dehydration and 3) Food--without food we would die of starvation. Food provides us with the necessary “fuel” for our bodies to function.

While it is true we need all these things physically, it is equally true that we need hydration and nutrition spiritually speaking.

There is a reason Jesus talked about “hungering and thirsting after righteousness” in Matthew 5:6 because this goes back to His temptation in the wilderness after He had fasted for 40 days and nights. In appealing to the lust of the flesh, Satan tempted Jesus to turn stones into bread to satisfy His physical hunger. Jesus responded with Scripture, in particular a quote of Deuteronomy 8:3, when He stated, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (NKJV).

Jesus, with these words, plainly declared, our need for spiritual nourishment. Physical food cannot provide nourishment for the soul. Physical drink cannot provide spiritual quenching for the soul. This is where God’s word comes into play.

God’s word is spiritual food for the soul (Heb. 5:12-14; Jn. 6:35ff) and it provides us as well with the water that gives life to the soul through and in Christ Himself (Jn. 4:10ff; 7:37-39; Rev. 22:18-19). Without God’s provisions we would not be able to live nor to survive spiritually because our soul would die of spiritual dehydration or thirst and spiritual starvation.

The week of June 7th through the 10th at the Monroe Church of Christ we will be having our Vacation Bible School and the focus for this week will be on how God has used food in the Bible to provide for people and to teach great spiritual lessons on our dependence on God. We will begin at 7 PM each evening with Bible classes for all ages.

We hope that you will join us this week as we take a trip into the spiritual kitchen that belongs to God and consider the “food” and “water” He has provided for our souls.

When A Little is a Lot
Robert Alexander

Imagine that you were one of Jesus’ disciples and that you were with Him as He crossed over the sea of Galilee and went up on a mountain.

Imagine being with Him as He looked and saw a great multitude approaching Him. Imagine hearing His question to Philip: “where shall we buy bread that these may eat?” (Jn. 6:5).

Imagine having a dismayed look on your face and agreeing with Philip who told Jesus that “two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them” (Jn. 6:7).

Imagine even greater dismay when learning from Andrew that there was a lad present who had five barley loaves and two small fish (Jn. 6:9) because you know such would not even touch how much food would be needed to feed such a number of people.
Imagine the confusion amongst the disciples when Jesus told them to make the people sit down (Jn. 6:10).

Imagine seeing Jesus taking the loaves and fish and giving thanks for both having them distributed among the people (v11).

Imagine the surprise upon seeing these loaves and fishes distributed that the people were able to receive as “much as they wanted” and “were filled” (v12) and having over twelve baskets filled with the fragments (v13).

Truly, this was an astounding miracle in which five thousand men (the number would be closer to 10,000 if women and children were counted) were fed by Jesus all at once with just five loaves and two fish.

What does this teach us? A little is a lot when God uses it and that we should never underestimate the power of a little, a few or even small things!

Please join us June 9th at 7 pm at our Vacation Bible School at the church of Christ here in Monroe, GA as we continue exploring food in Scripture and how God uses it to provide and to teach. On this evening in our classes, we will explore in detail this particular miracle and consider further this principle of how God can use but a little to accomplish a lot. I hope you will join us in this study.

What?
(God Provides Our Needs, Not Necessarily Our Wants)
Robert Alexander

James reminds us that “every good and every perfect gift” comes from Jehovah God (Jas. 1:17). God is a giving God. God provides us with what we need (Phil. 4:19; 2 Pet. 1:3).

Sometimes though, God comes through in unexpected ways or in some ways where we might ask “what?” This was true for Israel in Exodus 16.

Having been freed from Egyptian bo***ge and having escaped the Egyptians for the final time at the Red Sea, upon camping at a place called Elim, the Israelites complained about a lack of food and desired to have simply died by the hand of God in Egypt (v2-3). God heard the groanings of His people and provided what they desired (food) but not in a way they expected.

God rained bread from Heaven for them (v4). Israel upon seeing it did not know what to think. It was like coriander seed and its color as of bdellium (Num. 11:7-9). Israel did not know what it was and wondered what it was, so they called it “Manna” which means “a whatness, manna (so called from the question about it)” (Strong’s Concordance).

God provided this manna for Israel every day except on the Sabbath day.

Was this what Israel expected? No. Was it what they needed? Absolutely. Does God always give us what we expect? No. Does He give us what we need? Yes. Remember, a need is what is necessary, a want is something extra.

The greatest example of God giving us what we need is seen with Jesus, the true manna from Heaven (cf. Jn. 6:31ff), His word (Matt. 4:4ff) and His church (Matt. 16:18). God has truly given us all things we need for spiritual life and godliness (2 Pet. 1:3).

On Monday, June 8th during our VBS here at the Monroe church of Christ, we will further dive into God’s giving in unexpected ways by way of the Manna and the lessons it offers for us today, especially as it relates to what we need and how our needs are met by God, sometimes in unexpected ways. We will begin at 7 pm and have classes for all ages. I hope to see you with us!
