Monhegan Community Church

Monhegan Community Church an independent local church in partnership with the Maine Seacoast Mission It means you wish to keep the Church a vital part of the Monhegan community.

The Church is located on Monhegan Island, Maine, in the traditional territory of the Wabanaki Confederacy. Founded in the 1880s on land deeded to “the Inhabitants of the Plantation of Monhegan”, the Church was born out of Christian service to the community. Flowing from that legacy and from Monhegan's tradition of hospitality, the Church is a faith community which is welcoming, diverse, and inclus

ive. In that spirit, the Church seeks to practice and teach the values of love for Creator and creation; neighbors near and far; and oneself. The governance of the Church is vested in its Friends, who participate in and contribute to the life and support of the church. Being a Friend doesn’t assume an annual tithe or donation, or even taking on a volunteer job, though such types of support are most welcome. To join the roster of Friends, please email [email protected] with your name(s), address, email address, and phone number(s). Liking this page alone does not add you to the roster. All are welcome! Thank you!

Please welcome Rev. Margaret Clemons as our next guest minister, with us Wed. 5/27 - Wed. 6/3, leading our 10 AM Sunday service & otherwise being available to the community. She says, " Greetings, Dear Friends, I am honored and blessed to be your minister for these few days on this lovely and enchanted island!

"I am a retired United Methodist minister (Elder) of the United Methodist Church. I moved to NW Ohio from Maryland to be close to family when I retired in 2021. Hobbies include reading, knitting, and art history. Celtic spirituality started tending my soul many years ago. I will be returning to Iona in mid-June to continue my pilgrimage. Celtic spirituality speaks of 'thin places,' where the veil between heaven and earth is thin. Monhegan Island is a thin place for me and has drawn me to it since my first visit in 1998.

"While I am with you, I will be offering two prayer and healing services at 4 PM Thursday, May 28 and on Tuesday, June 2 at 10 AM.

Please welcome Rev. Jay Sprout as our next guest minister, with us Tues. 5/19 - Wed. 5/27, leading our 10 AM Sunday service & otherwise being available to the community. He says, "Returning to Monhegan as a minister-in-residence is always a kind of trip back in time: to my first year of ordained ministry, over a half century ago. After seminary and ordination I accepted the unique position teaching on the island for the 1975-76 school year, succeeding Bobby and Ruth Ives. Like Bobby, I also served as pastor of the Monhegan Church, offering Sunday worship services. After that memorable year, I moved to Vermont for my full-time career in ministry with the United Church of Christ for the next 38 years."
If anyone reading this might be willing & able to help him out with music for the service this Sun. 5/24, please stop by the parsonage. Thank you!

Weekly worship services resume this Sun. 5/17 at 10 AM!
Our first minister minister-in-residence this season is Rev. Wayne Sawyer. He is the retired pastor of the Thomaston (ME) Baptist Church, where he served from 1984 to 2023. He & his wife Meg live in Tenants Harbor, close to the ferry to Monhegan from Port Clyde. They have been happily attending Port Clyde Baptist Church. The Sawyers have two grown daughters, both happily married & in their own homes. Each now has a child (one girl, one boy), which makes Wayne comment, "We are old!" Wayne & Meg also enjoy camping in their tiny camper trailer & have joined a club of owners of similar campers.
They will be with us Th. 5/14-Tues. 5/19. Please make them welcome!
