Monhegan Community Church

Monhegan Community Church an independent local church in partnership with the Maine Seacoast Mission It means you wish to keep the Church a vital part of the Monhegan community.

The Church is located on Monhegan Island, Maine, in the traditional territory of the Wabanaki Confederacy. Founded in the 1880s on land deeded to “the Inhabitants of the Plantation of Monhegan”, the Church was born out of Christian service to the community. Flowing from that legacy and from Monhegan's tradition of hospitality, the Church is a faith community which is welcoming, diverse, and inclus

ive. In that spirit, the Church seeks to practice and teach the values of love for Creator and creation; neighbors near and far; and oneself. The governance of the Church is vested in its Friends, who participate in and contribute to the life and support of the church. Being a Friend doesn’t assume an annual tithe or donation, or even taking on a volunteer job, though such types of support are most welcome. To join the roster of Friends, please email [email protected] with your name(s), address, email address, and phone number(s). Liking this page alone does not add you to the roster. All are welcome! Thank you!

Please welcome our next minister, Nicole Starling Carlon, with us from Wed. 8/19 - Wed. 9/2, leading our 10 AM Sunday services & otherwise being available to the community.

Nicole was born in Rockland, ME & was brought to Monhegan at 6 days old where she would live with her Dad & Mom at Lobster Cove in a house which was built by Rockwell Kent. She also lived in the duplex that was behind what is now the Black Duck that burned down in 1965. In 1969 the Lobster Cove house was sold to Jamie Wyeth by Nicole’s grandmother, Jennie, so she no longer had a place on the island but her heart was left there.

In 1974 Nicole became a music minister in a non-denominational church where she worked with children doing musicals & creative arts.

She continued teaching music & drama to students in a private Christian school for 6 years. Nicole went back to school to become a music therapist but has utilized her skills she learned to now help those recovering from addiction through music.

Nicole has also been a speaker, recovery coach, music director & pastor.

Nicole currently resides in the state of WA & is a pastor & worship director at a Recovery Church called Xchange. Xchange has 7 houses that deal with the recovery of individuals & families. "It is up to a two-year program that has been quite successful. We also have behavioral health facilities in Ridgefield & Vancouver, WA to deal with mental health & drug crisis. We are also involved with a homeless outreach called Hope Village with 20 houseless people living in the units & have been very successful in transitioning many to their own homes. Our Live Love ministry feeds & clothes people 3 times a week as well as distributing food to the community."

Nicole periodically does memory care work with her music & is in a professional band that plays throughout the NW called Rockit Radio. She also does recycle art, reverse painting, on Vintage windows which she sells at Warehouse 10 in Rockaway Beach, OR. In addition, she's a professional photographer.

Nicole is incredibly honored & happy to be the Pastor on the Rock for two weeks & is looking forward to seeing old friends & making new ones. She is hosting a reception at the parsonage after the Sunday service on 8/23.

Please welcome our next minister, Rev. Dr. Judith Blachard, with us Wed. 8/12 - Wed. 8/19, leading our 10 AM Sunday services & otherwise being available to the community.

Judith is ordained in the United Church of Christ having spent most of her 47 years of ministry in hospital chaplaincy, both psychiatric (St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, D.C.) and general (Maine Medical Center). However, it was serving as Administrative Dean of Bangor Theological Seminary for four years that brought her back to Maine in 1993. In her retirement Judith is passionate about earth care and involvement in groups like FreeportCAN (Climate Action Now) and Third Act. She started a Green Team in her church in South Freeport and they succeeded in having solar panels put on the sanctuary roof. She is working hard at becoming bilingual in Spanish — Hablas español? An avid walker/hiker, Judith can be seen hiking up to the museum/art gallery where she enjoys volunteering or circumnavigating Monhegan with her trekking poles. She is a frequent visitor to Denver, Colorado, where her daughter and family live.

She will be leading an interfaith guided meditation at the Church this Sunday, 8/16, 4:30-5 PM. All welcome!

If you are musician and might be able to help with music for the Sunday service, please drop by the parsonage. Thank you!

Some scenes from yesterday’s very successful pie and cake auction at the church here on Monhegan. Thank you to ALL who participated, be you bakers, bidders or astonished audience members. It’s always a fun time, but with the very generous funds given in support of this valuable island resource some good headway should be able to be made on some much needed church and parsonage infrastructure updating.
