Letting go and moving on doesn’t mean we have to forget the good God has done.

But when we chase after a life that no longer exists, it often keeps us from the good and beauty God is trying to bring.

When the rug is pulled out from under us, when the life we were living collapses, it makes sense to hold on and to grip tighter.

But letting go, isn’t forgetting.

Letting go means giving ourselves permission to grieve and move on, it is choosing to allow God to rebuild, remake, and draw us into a future that is wildly open and ready for us.

The future is open, God is creative, God loves you, this is good news.

Life isn’t what we see on commercials, social media, Christmas cards, or even from our friends and family.

We like to edit, hide, change, and adjust, only to show the good parts.

The problem? Life is messy. If we edit out the mess, there isn’t much left to life.

Maybe instead of chasing and pretending life is clean and tidy, maybe we should embrace the mess and choose to actually live the life we have, not a picture of a life that is always changing.

In this series, “The Life We Actually Live,” we’re diving into the Lectionary each week to see what Scripture, and the people who inhabit its pages, have to say about the life we’re actually living.
