Mobile Apostleship of the Sea

Mobile Apostleship of the Sea The Mobile Apostleship of the Sea is a part of the AOS-USA mission. AOS-USA member Port Chaplains seek to accommodate mariners' unique lifestyle and needs.

We provide services for the Archdiocese of Mobile Alabama on the port of Alabama in Mobile, AL. WHO WE ARE

Apostleship of the Sea of the United States of America (AOS-USA) is the professional association of Catholic Maritime Ministers, Cruise Ship Priests, Mariners and all those who support the ministry to the People of the Sea. AOS-USA provides mutual support, continuing education, and intercomm

unication for Catholic Maritime Ministers

AOS-USA labors on behalf of the dignity and human rights of every person in the maritime community. Sensitive to the complex church and social environment of today's world, AOS-USA offers men and women training and formation to prepare for Catholic maritime ministry. AOS-USA operates the Cruise Ship Priest Program for the pastoral care of cruise ship passengers and crew. We ensure that only valid priests in good standing, who have their Bishop's/Provincial's permission to serve are onboard as Chaplains. WHAT WE DO

Apostleship of the Sea of the United States of America serves in many capacities. The primary activities of the AOS-USA are as follows:

Cruise Ship Priest Program

AOS-USA provides priests for service onboard Cruise Ships, in order to provide Sacramental and Pastoral Care for the Passengers, Staff and Crew onboard. Each priest is vetted and has the approval of his Competent Authority to serve in this capacity each year. In addition to providing Sacramental Care, the priest is available for confidential counseling and spiritual guidance. During unexpected times of tragedy onboard, the priest provides comfort to the hurt or grieving, in addition to spiritual and pastoral care. Port Ministry

AOS-USA member Port Chaplains serve in many ports throughout the United States, reaching out to mariners, fishermen, dock workers, workboat operators, their families, and all who work or travel on the waterways of the world. Often away from their homes, many have little support to help maintain lasting ties with their faith and families. Most importantly, they offer the Eucharist, and the sacramental and spiritual life of the Church to the people of the sea. They also seek to ensure a safe work environment, just contracts, a genuine welcome and safe haven while in port, spiritual renewal, communication with loved ones back home, and recreational possibilities. The Official Prayer for AOS:
“Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on all seafarers: Our Lady, Star of the Sea, St. Peter, St. Andrew, pray for us. Lord, save us or we perish.” (Mt 8:25)
HISTORY

In 1920, Catholic port ministry was conceived and developed in Glasgow, Scotland, by Rev. Donald Macintosh, Arthur Gannon, and Peter Anson, who were concerned about the lack of witness the Church was showing aboard ship. Two years later they approached Pope Pius XI, who bestowed his blessings on the ministry and encouraged the Apostleship of the Sea to extend its mission to the oceans and shores of all the hemispheres. The mission of AOS-USA is to teach and witness to the Word of God and to serve God's people. And we are always expanding our services and trying new ways to provide Christian minstries by land, by sea, and beyond.

“The Lord always consoles in closeness, with truth and hope. They are the three features of the Lord’s consolation, in closeness — never distant: I am here…“I am here.” The strength of closeness, of presence, and He speaks little, but is close. A second feature of Jesus’ closeness, of Jesus’ way of consoling is truth: Jesus is truthful. He doesn’t say formal things that are lies: “No, stay calm, everything will pass, nothing will happen, it will pass, things pass…” No, He says the truth…We are before death; it’s the truth. And He says it simply and He even says it meekly, without wounding. And this is the third feature: Jesus consoles in hope. He doesn’t say “No, you won’t suffer, it’s nothing…” No. He says the truth: “I am close to you; this is the truth: it’s an awful moment, of danger, of death. However, don’t trouble your heart. Remain in that peace, that peace which is at the base of every consolation, because I will come and will take you by the hand where I shall be.” It’s not easy to let oneself be consoled by the Lord. Often, in bad moments, we get angry with the Lord and we don’t let Him come and speak to us this way, with this gentleness, with this closeness, with this meekness, with this truth and with this hope. Let us ask for the grace to allow ourselves to be consoled by the Lord. The Lord’s consolation is truthful and doesn’t deceive. It’s not anesthesia, no, but it’s close, it’s truthful and it opens to us the doors of hope.”

Greetings and Peace of Easter!
It has been a most isolated Lent. We have been forced to pray individually and celebrate our liturgies in live stream with the aide of technology. Now we are forced to celebrate Easter in the same manner. While we are not together in church our individual “Alleluia He is Risen” rings out all the same.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your ongoing support of this wonderful ministry. As you are aware our ship visiting has been curtailed out of an abundance of safety for our visitors and for all crews. We are not alone as centers around the world remain closed or are limited to leaving goods at the foot of the gangway.
Some thoughts for your ongoing prayer intentions;
Coast Guard, pilots, tug operators, longshoremen, stevedores, agents and all port personnel continue to work ensuring that the flow of the necessary goods worldwide continues. May they stay safe.
Seafarers continue to bring goods in and out of ports around the world but in most places the can not leave their vessel. For their safety they must stay onboard while in port with no access for personal shopping. Local business men Virgilio and Jamie are providing some shopping services but they too only drop off deliveries at the gangway.
Crew changes have come to a halt. With no way for crews to access flights due to the closings of both sea and air ports there is no way to return crews who's contract has ended or to bring in replacement crews. Contracts have been extended but there are very limited options.
Travel within countries is difficult if not impossible. Philippine authorities have enacted strict travel restrictions to combat the virus which has resulted in returning foreign workers being unable to get home. They are stranded in their own country.
We all long for the day we return to a more normal life. In the mean time please pray for all those impacted by this virus, not only those on our local front lines but also those who are invisible and hidden behind the lines.

Remember the lesson of Easter is this, the dark moments of Good Friday and Easter Saturday gave rise to the Joy Filled “HE IS RISEN!” He is with us always, especially in our darkest moments.

Easter Blessings,

Fr. Lito and Deacon John
