The Ceremony of the Advent Candle:
The second Sunday of Advent, the candle of peace.
Invocation
Hymn O Come, All Ye Faithful
Affirmation of Faith: Apostle’s Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic** church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen
** catholic (with a small “c”) means “universal”
Call to Confession:
Come now, and lay your sins before God that He might wash you and make you as white as snow.
Prayer of Confession:
We confess our reluctance to step out of our boxes of protection and take the risks that You call us to. We desire comfort and not challenge, ease and not discomfort, pain release and not pain, easy lessons and not hard ones. We want things but hate sacrifice, we have sinned against our brothers and sisters, judged and criticized when we didn’t know their circumstances, condemned when we should have been forgiving and spoken when we should have been silent. O Father, forgive us and free us from our ugly mean ways. Jesus, Lord of Our lives, Holy Comforter, ever present, cleanse us. Make us over that we might be faithful and committed followers. Amen.
Assurance of Pardon:
In Jesus Christ, our savior and Lord, we are forgiven. Send us forward to be the people of Christmas and Easter, to act like the people we say we are.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
