“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” -Romans 12:1-2

As we live lives of perpetual worship throughout the week, we always look forward to Sundays where we gather together corporately to celebrate the supremacy of Christ together. Grace Table—who is someone not plugged into a local church that you could invite to join you on Sunday?

Shoot the invite and we’ll see you in a couple of days church!

“And having sought out the disciples, we stayed there for seven days. And through the Spirit they were telling Paul not to go on to Jerusalem. When our days there were ended, we departed and went on our journey, and they all, with wives and children, accompanied us until we were outside the city. And kneeling down on the beach, we prayed and said farewell to one another. Then we went on board the ship, and they returned home.” -Acts 21:4-6

This past Sunday we saw in Acts 21 that Paul presses on to Jerusalem because he is constrained by the Holy Spirit to do so, even as fellow believers lovingly urge him not to go. After all, they feared what awaited him there. Their warnings were not wrong. They reflected the suffering Paul would face. However, while others focused on the danger, Paul remained focused on God’s direction for him. Through the noise, we saw that following the Holy Spirit sometimes means listening beyond the well-intentioned voices of fear, opinion, and uncertainty so we can faithfully obey God’s call, even when the path is difficult.

“And when they came to him, he said to them: ‘You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia, serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews; how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house.’” -Acts 20:18-20

As we saw with Paul before the Ephesians elders we can learn that believers our lives preach loudly before our mouths ever open. Though life and ministry can have seasons of great difficulty we have confidence in the Lord who goes alongside & before us.

“And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me. But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” -Acts 20:22-24

Yesterday we wrapped up Acts 20 by looking at Paul’s final words to the Ephesians elders. Knowing he would never see these fellow brothers again, Paul gave them some powerful reminders of the humility with which he served, the tears he shed, the trials he endured, the truth he proclaimed, the suffering he was willing to embrace for them, the church he was called to guard, and the grace that compelled him to give himself away.

Don’t assume difficulty means God has abandoned you. Faithful ministry isn’t proven by the absence of tears and trials. Faithful ministry is proven by consistency & commitment through the tears and trials. Our confidence is rooted not in what is coming at us tomorrow, but rather in knowing the God who holds tomorrow & us in the palms of His hand.

Be on the lookout later today for the sermon. You’ll be able to tune in on the app, website, or YouTube!
