Ash Wednesday (February 18th) marks the beginning of Lent 2026. This year, in lieu of corporate worship at OPC, the Sanctuary will be open from 9:00am - 1:00pm for a time of individual prayer and meditation. Pastor John will be available with devotional resources / Scriptures and hymns, as well as ashes for anyone who would like to receive them.

As we enter this sacred period, the 40 days preceding Easter (excluding Sundays), we are called to reflect and prepare. For some, this means deprivation - intentionally creating a void and filling that space in conversation with Christ. “Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow Jesus…” (Matthew 16:24). For others, this is a time of making intentional choices… choices that bring us closer to God… decisions that allow us to partake in His mercy and actively share His goodness in ways that glorify Him.

During His 40 days of solitude in the desert, Christ revealed to us the pattern of discipline that is now characteristic of Lent... a “season of radical attentiveness to God” (Bishop Bruce Ough). In Paul’s letter to the Colossians (4:2), he wrote, “Devote yourselves to prayer; stay alert in it with thanksgiving.” The Message variation reads, “Pray diligently. Stay alert, with your eyes wide open in gratitude… Pray that every time I open my mouth, I’ll be able to make Christ plain as day to them.” (Col 4:4).

This Ash Wednesday, whether through fasting or feasting, we are asked to make room for our Savior – to request His guidance, listen for His answers, and obey His commands. May we be radically attentive to our God, resting in this assurance, that “God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son,” and because of His great love and amazing grace, today we rejoice, knowing we are “dead to sin, and alive in Christ” (John 3:16; Romans 6:11).

Thanks be to God!!

✨ Epiphany Sunday ✨

Today, we remember God’s manifestation - or self revelation - to the world, in and through His Son, Jesus Christ. Epiphany is noted as a time of commemoration and reflection - an opportunity to pause and recognize the journey of the Magi, the significance of the star that illuminated their path to The Light of the World, and the ways in which our Savior guides our lives today. The faith and hope of the Wise Men ultimately led them to their Messiah, our Messiah, Love incarnate... Immanuel, God with us!

Excerpts from PCUSA’s Companion to the Book of Common Worship further explain:
"The word “epiphany” (from the Greek epiphaneia or theophaneia) means “appearance” or “manifestation” of God, and has roots in the word for sunrise or dawn. In ancient times, an epiphany meant either a visible manifestation of a god or the solemn visit of a ruler venerated as a god... For Christians, Christmas marks the coming of God to us; Epiphany celebrates the appearance of the Lord in the midst of humanity. The Christmas stories of the birth of Immanuel declare the divine entry; Epiphany extols the revelation of God to the world in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. In our celebrations of Christmas and Epiphany we rejoice in the dawning and the arising of Light in darkness. Epiphany not only discloses the Savior to the world but also calls the world to show forth Christ, to be witnesses to God’s true Light. The timeless mystery of the incarnation, God in flesh, leads us forth to show and tell of Christ as God’s gift of grace and salvation for all persons. Some call this ongoing epiphany the work of Christmas... As the magi came from the East at this time to worship the Christ child, God’s covenant of grace is extended to all who believe the good news of Christ Jesus. The star that guided the magi, reminds us of God’s promise and purpose to the nations - the bright dawning of God’s self-revelation in Christ."

Arise and shine, for your Light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you!
