There is an old Chinese story about a young man who wanted to become a sculptor. He arranged to study with a master carver who was widely respected both for the quality of his work and for his ability as a teacher. On the first day they met for lessons, the elderly teacher put a piece of jade into the young man's hand and instructed the student to hold it in a firm grasp. But rather than talking about carving stone, he instead spoke about philosophy, the weather, and other subjects that had nothing to do with sculpting. After an hour of that, he sent the young man home. Day after day the same thing happened. He would hand the young man a piece of jade and talk about anything else besides stones. The boy was becoming frustrated with the experience, but one day the old man put a piece of stone into his hand and the student immediately responded, “That’s not jade!” Over time, he had learned to recognize the real thing, and was immediately able to identify an imposter.

We live in a world in which lies are often held up as truth. We cannot just believe anything that we hear. We must be students of the Word of God so that we become familiar with the truth. This is the most effective way to identify error. If we compare what we hear to what God has said, we can spot the errors and efforts at deception. The Bible is not just to be heard at church but read and studied and meditated on every day of the week.

The Bible in our hearts and minds is a powerful defense against the deception of the enemy.

Infusions have become a popular way to replenish fluids or nutrients in your body. At your home or at an infusion clinic, you’re hooked to an IV that delivers vitamins, minerals, and fluids directly into your bloodstream.

Are infusions available for us spiritually? If so, where can we find an infusion of strength for our souls? For that we turn to the clinic of God’s Word. In Ephesians 3:16, we learn a vital prayer to offer for ourselves: Lord, I ask You to grant me, according to the riches of Your glory, to be strengthened with might through Your Spirit in my inner being.

The Holy Spirit was sent to us as a Helper. He comes to strengthen us. When you feel weak, ask the Lord to impart His strength.

If you’d like another prayer along these lines, use these words from hymnist Edwin Hatch: "Breathe on me, breath of God, fill me with life anew, that I may love what Thou dost love, and do what Thou wouldst do.”

“Breathe on me, breath of God until my heart is pure, until my will is one with Thine, to do and to endure.” -Edwin Hatch

After Thomas Edison unveiled the electric lightbulb in 1879, homes across America began switching over to the system. In 1891, President Benjamin Harrison was about halfway through his term in office when the proposal was made to bring electricity to the White House. A massive generator was installed in a nearby building to provide power. When the project was finished, the President and his wife were so afraid of the new system that they refused to touch the light switches. They depended completely on staff members to turn the lights on and off. According to one report, they would even sleep with the lights on rather than touch the switch themselves.

Fear often grows when we face something unfamiliar. In some instances, that uncertainty can keep us from enjoying what is available. Worse, it can keep us from obeying the instructions of God. When God has made His will clear, an unwillingness to move forward because we are afraid is always wrong. No enemy or opponent can stand against Him. We have His faithful promise to always be with us, and that should give us confidence to overcome every fear except the fear of the Lord. “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28).

There will always be threats and dangers for us to face. Refusing to give in to fear does not mean we are ignoring reality, but instead that we are trusting in One who is greater than every adversary. The bo***ge of fear is replaced by the freedom of God’s promises and our confidence in His love for us.

We must not allow fear to restrict our obedience to the work God has placed before us.

Jesus’ preparation of His disciples for His return to the Father in heaven was disconcerting for them. For three years they had witnessed His teaching and His merciful healings—not to mention His companionship and counsel. What would they do without Him?

The solution He revealed to them was new. He would send to them a Helper who they came to understand was the Holy Spirit—given to them a few weeks later at the Feast of Pentecost (Acts 2). In fact, Jesus said it would be to their advantage for Him to go away and for the Spirit to come in His place, enabling them to do even greater works than He had done (John 14:12). So the Holy Spirit was given to all believers to empower the life of Christ in each one who believes (Romans 8:11; Galatians 2:20; 5:22-23).

Never forget during difficult moments: If you belong to Christ by faith in Him, He dwells in you by His Spirit.

“He who has the Holy Spirit in his heart and the Scripture in his hands has all he needs.” -Alexander MacLaren

On the list of seven sins that are especially despicable in the eyes of God one sin appears twice—lying. In a world that increasingly doesn’t believe there is such a thing as truth, lying is not usually seen as a major problem. But God views things differently. The holy God of truth abhors lies because they are an assault on His very nature. Hebrews 6:18 says that it is “impossible for God to lie," and Titus 1:2 describes Him as a God "that cannot lie."

The French Enlightenment essayist, Michel de Montaigne wrote, “Lying is indeed an accursed vice. We are men, and we have relations with one another only by speech. If we recognized the horror and gravity of an untruth, we should more justifiably punish it with fire than any other crime. I commonly find people taking the most ill-advised pains to correct their children for their harmless faults, and worrying them about heedless acts which leave no trace and have no consequences. Once the tongue has got the knack of lying, it is difficult to imagine how impossible it is to correct it.”

There are times when it may seem like truth will lead to trouble while a lie will allow us to escape it, but that is always a false promise. Lies tend to grow larger and larger because we have to keep adding falsehoods to prevent disclosure. It is far better to face reality by speaking the truth, even if the immediate consequences will be unpleasant, than it is to begin a lie. Others usually see through lies eventually, but God sees and hates them immediately.

God is complete truth and He expects total honesty from His children.

The first twelve chapters of Acts concern Peter. In Acts 12, an angel freed him from prison, and he went to the home of John Mark and spoke to the disciples. Then he left for “…another place.” Starting with chapter 13, the remainder of the book of Acts concerns the apostle Paul.

Where did Peter go? The Bible doesn’t tell us, but ancient traditions say John Mark led him from Jerusalem to a section of Egypt known as “Babylon” or “Old Cairo.” It was possibly the same place Joseph and Mary fled with the baby Jesus, beyond the reach of Herod. It was a place of refuge. (Thomas C. Oden, The African Memory of Mark (Downers Grove: IVP, 2011), 118-122.)

We all need a place of refuge. Deuteronomy 33:27 says, “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms...” When we face trouble, we can retreat to our Refuge. He is always there, easily accessible. We have only to turn to Him. When everything else fails, there is still another place—His everlasting arms.

“God will our strength and refuge prove, in all distress a present aid, and though the trembling earth remove, we will not fear or be dismayed.” -The Presbyterian Psalter

In the 1980s, Claire Sylvia became the first person in New England to receive a successful combined heart and lung transplant. She suffered from pulmonary hypertension, and doctors said that the transplant was her only hope. As she began her recovery after the successful surgery, Sylvia discovered something unexpected. In her book A Change of Heart, she related how she found herself craving foods like peppers and chicken nuggets that she had never liked before. When she tracked down the family of the young man whose heart and lungs she had received after his death in a motorcycle accident, they told her that those were among his favorite foods. In fact, he even had a box of chicken nuggets in a pocket when he had his wreck. Sylvia concluded that, with her new heart, she had received new appetites as well.

When we come to Christ for salvation, accepting His free offer of grace, we receive a new heart and a new set of desires. The old sinful nature is still present, but we have different desires and appetites. When we were lost the things of God did not appeal to us, but after salvation that changed. “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious” (1 Peter 2:2-3). The more we fill our hearts and minds with the Word of God the less appealing the things of the world will be to us.

The power of the Holy Spirit enables us to walk according to our new nature rather than the old one.

J. Sidlow Baxter wrote, “Our Lord is not a fair-weather companion only. When the dark hour comes, when the storm beats about us, when the grievous blow falls, He is the Friend that sticks closer than a brother…. Our Lord is not merely a distant spectator of our concerns, far removed from us in a far-off sky. He is a present help.”

When we truly grasp the nearness of God and His involvement in even the smallest concerns in life, we’re empowered to lift up our hearts and lungs in praise. We often rely on God during difficult times, but do we also remember that He’s there during the good times as well? He’s with us in the ups and downs, and we should take time during both to praise Him for that. Are things going well for you? Praise the Lord; He is a God who sends our blessings! Are things difficult right now? Praise the Lord; He is a God who bears our burdens.

Let everything on earth praise the Lord!

“Most certainly is He the helper of His people and their cause considered collectively: but He is more than the God of the multitude. Each of His people may boldly say, ‘The Lord is my helper.’” -J. Sidlow Baxter
