Baptist Church Planting West

Baptist Church Planting West Established in 1983, Baptist Church Planting West became a ministry of Moab Baptist Church of Moab, Utah in 2019.

We seek to emphasize the need for doctrinally sound, stable, soul-winning Baptist churches in the Mountain West region of the United States. Baptist Church Planting WEST (BCPW) was started in 1983 by Pastor and Mrs. Harvey Seidel in Idaho Falls, Idaho, as a ministry of Gethsemane Baptist Church. In May 1984, BCPW was incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in the State of Idaho. Soon after, i

n September 1984, BCPW came under the ministry umbrella of the Fundamental Baptist Fellowship, and Pastor Seidel remained as the Director. BCPW’s ministry and that of the Seidel’s is still being felt today, even though this organization became officially inactive in 1999. The last BCPW missionary was Pastor Cole Howe (1998-1999) when he came as the pastor of Moab Baptist Church. BCPW and the Seidel’s served as mentors and financial and ministry accountability sources for the Howe family. July 2019, Pastor Howe sent a letter to Pastor Seidel requesting that he become the custodian of Baptist Church Planting WEST files, even using the name and reputation for further church planting endeavors in the West. In addition to the BCPW name and files, Pastor Howe was also given the complete library (many hundreds of volumes) and sermon outlines, notebooks, and manuscripts (for over 50 years of ministry) of Pastor Seidel! Moab Baptist Church became the official home of Baptist Church Planting WEST on October 23, 2019, with Pastor Howe as its Director. The purpose of Baptist Church Planting WEST remains the same as it was in 1983, mirroring that of Moab Baptist Church: to operate exclusively for religious, charitable, missionary purposes, and particularly to conduct church planting with emphasis upon teaching the Holy Bible and thus secure individuals’ trust in Jesus Christ through a religious program of evangelism, Christian education, worship, social activity, and missionary outreach; and to engage in any and all lawful activities. The intention of BCPW and Moab Baptist is to be a valuable resource of information, fellowship, financial support, ministry accountability, and mentorship for new church works and existing churches, especially in the Mountain West region of the United States.

Though Elijah was a powerful and greatly used prophet of God, James reminds us that he was also human, facing the same pressures, temptations, and struggles that we face. The thing that set Elijah apart was a commitment to earnest, passionate, faithful, and repeated prayer. He was not attempting to do his work for God in his own strength, because he recognized that would not suffice. Instead he depended on the faithfulness of God to work in response to his fervent prayers.

R. A. Torrey wrote, “Those who would have us think that they have attained to some sublime height of faith and trust because they never know any agony of conflict or of prayer, have surely gotten beyond their Lord, and beyond the mightiest victors for God, both in effort and prayer, that the ages of Christian history have known. When we learn to come to God with an intensity of desire that wrings the soul, then shall we know a power in prayer that most of us do not know now.”

There are too many Christians today who do not take prayer as seriously as they should. Prayer is the tool that God has given us to tap into His unlimited resources, to see Him work, and to have our daily needs met. Those promises only work to the extent that we claim them in our prayers. Prayer is not a last resort but a first step. “Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not” (James 4:2).

Today's Growth Principle
A Christian who does not pray will be a Christian who misses out on what God can and would do.

It is estimated that around three hundred direct quotations from the Old Testament appear in the New Testament. References and allusions bring that number closer to one thousand. We often take for granted how often the New Testament writers incorporate a quotation or reference from the Old Testament—especially in their conversations where they appear to be quoting from memory. And we have to remember that they had no computers or complete copies of the Old Testament to work with when writing the New Testament.

Jesus appears to quote the Old Testament around 75 times in His teachings and verbal exchanges with others. Take, for example, His exchange with the devil during His 40-day sojourn in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). Three times He refuted the devil’s temptations by quoting verses from Deuteronomy. Paul quotes or alludes to the Old Testament around 75 times just in the book of Romans. How did they do this? Memorization and in-depth familiarity with Scripture.

Consider setting a goal of memorizing one verse or passage of Scripture each week. After all, the Word of God is the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17) and the foundation of faith (Romans 10:17).

“Memorization is the first step to meditation.” -Jerry Bridges

There is an old Chinese story about a young man who wanted to become a sculptor. He arranged to study with a master carver who was widely respected both for the quality of his work and for his ability as a teacher. On the first day they met for lessons, the elderly teacher put a piece of jade into the young man's hand and instructed the student to hold it in a firm grasp. But rather than talking about carving stone, he instead spoke about philosophy, the weather, and other subjects that had nothing to do with sculpting. After an hour of that, he sent the young man home. Day after day the same thing happened. He would hand the young man a piece of jade and talk about anything else besides stones. The boy was becoming frustrated with the experience, but one day the old man put a piece of stone into his hand and the student immediately responded, “That’s not jade!” Over time, he had learned to recognize the real thing, and was immediately able to identify an imposter.

We live in a world in which lies are often held up as truth. We cannot just believe anything that we hear. We must be students of the Word of God so that we become familiar with the truth. This is the most effective way to identify error. If we compare what we hear to what God has said, we can spot the errors and efforts at deception. The Bible is not just to be heard at church but read and studied and meditated on every day of the week.

The Bible in our hearts and minds is a powerful defense against the deception of the enemy.

Infusions have become a popular way to replenish fluids or nutrients in your body. At your home or at an infusion clinic, you’re hooked to an IV that delivers vitamins, minerals, and fluids directly into your bloodstream.

Are infusions available for us spiritually? If so, where can we find an infusion of strength for our souls? For that we turn to the clinic of God’s Word. In Ephesians 3:16, we learn a vital prayer to offer for ourselves: Lord, I ask You to grant me, according to the riches of Your glory, to be strengthened with might through Your Spirit in my inner being.

The Holy Spirit was sent to us as a Helper. He comes to strengthen us. When you feel weak, ask the Lord to impart His strength.

If you’d like another prayer along these lines, use these words from hymnist Edwin Hatch: "Breathe on me, breath of God, fill me with life anew, that I may love what Thou dost love, and do what Thou wouldst do.”

“Breathe on me, breath of God until my heart is pure, until my will is one with Thine, to do and to endure.” -Edwin Hatch

After Thomas Edison unveiled the electric lightbulb in 1879, homes across America began switching over to the system. In 1891, President Benjamin Harrison was about halfway through his term in office when the proposal was made to bring electricity to the White House. A massive generator was installed in a nearby building to provide power. When the project was finished, the President and his wife were so afraid of the new system that they refused to touch the light switches. They depended completely on staff members to turn the lights on and off. According to one report, they would even sleep with the lights on rather than touch the switch themselves.

Fear often grows when we face something unfamiliar. In some instances, that uncertainty can keep us from enjoying what is available. Worse, it can keep us from obeying the instructions of God. When God has made His will clear, an unwillingness to move forward because we are afraid is always wrong. No enemy or opponent can stand against Him. We have His faithful promise to always be with us, and that should give us confidence to overcome every fear except the fear of the Lord. “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28).

There will always be threats and dangers for us to face. Refusing to give in to fear does not mean we are ignoring reality, but instead that we are trusting in One who is greater than every adversary. The bo***ge of fear is replaced by the freedom of God’s promises and our confidence in His love for us.

We must not allow fear to restrict our obedience to the work God has placed before us.

Jesus’ preparation of His disciples for His return to the Father in heaven was disconcerting for them. For three years they had witnessed His teaching and His merciful healings—not to mention His companionship and counsel. What would they do without Him?

The solution He revealed to them was new. He would send to them a Helper who they came to understand was the Holy Spirit—given to them a few weeks later at the Feast of Pentecost (Acts 2). In fact, Jesus said it would be to their advantage for Him to go away and for the Spirit to come in His place, enabling them to do even greater works than He had done (John 14:12). So the Holy Spirit was given to all believers to empower the life of Christ in each one who believes (Romans 8:11; Galatians 2:20; 5:22-23).

Never forget during difficult moments: If you belong to Christ by faith in Him, He dwells in you by His Spirit.

“He who has the Holy Spirit in his heart and the Scripture in his hands has all he needs.” -Alexander MacLaren
