I’ve heard of several “guilt free Bible reading plans” recently. I can relate. You set out to read the Bible and in time, you get off track – soon you are days, weeks or even months behind. You’ve got to read books at a time in order to get back on track. Guilt sets in and even though you want to get back on track, it seems overwhelming. Instead, you give up and resolve to try it again next year. Reading the Bible is one of the best New Year’s resolutions you can make, but it can be challenging to accomplish.

Let me share with you how I’ve managed to successfully read the Bible in about a year’s time. Keep in mind, there is no 11th commandment that says you must read the Bible in a year. It is a good endeavor, but whether it takes you a year, two years or even three or more, the key is that you are regularly engaging with God through His Word – this is critical.

While I attended Bible college, the founder’s wife – and later president – was known for telling the students “3 – 5, 3- 5, 3 – 5…” She would repeat theses numbers as she addressed the student body. She knew the importance of regularly communing with God through His word and her advice was simple: read three chapters of the Bible during week days and five on weekends. Following this pattern will get you through the Bible in a year. How is this “guilt free,” because a certain reading is not assigned for a particular day – just read, keep working your way through Scripture and each day pick up where you left off.

There are days I have more time and I will read more, days when three chapters is difficult, but for the most part I keep to this pattern and it provides some structure to keep me moving forward and hearing from God. Additionally, I like to vary Old and New Testament books. For every two Old Testament books I read one New Testament book and keep alternating like this until I finish.

The key is keep reading. 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us: “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right” (NLT). Find a pattern that works for you and keep at it. Don’t get discouraged or anxious if you get behind. God speaks to us through His word, so if you want to hear His voice – pick up a Bible and start reading. I promise, you won’t be disappointed!

On this day of “longest night,” we don’t have to look far to see the darkness of death, disease, grief, disappointment, pain and loss all around us – it seemingly finds us and surrounds us. But like the dawning light of morning, we give thanks that though we walk in a world that has grown dark, the great light of Christ has dawned: “Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined” (Is. 9:2).

Emmanuel, God with us, shines forth in the darkness. Jesus came to us and lived as we do; a child of the poor in a world that was engulfed in darkness. Jesus stands as our great high priest who “understands our weaknesses, for He faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most" (Heb. 4:14-16).
He knows our every weakness and has conquered them that we would have life in His name. May you know the light of Christ on this day of “longest night.”

Blessings,

Pastor Jeremiah

Prayer of St. Patrick:
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ where I lie, Christ where I sit, Christ where I arise,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every one who speaks to me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
Salvation is of the Lord.
Salvation is of the Christ.
May your salvation, Lord, be ever with us.

On St. Patrick’s Day, many focus on good luck and all things Irish. But did you know this day is named for a man persecuted because of his Christian actions?
