HUGE, HISTORIC, AMAZING news from Helena today! ๐ฅณ๐๐ฅ
Judge Kathy Seeley in the First Judicial District Court of Montana ruled wholly in favor of the 16 youth plaintiffs in Held v. State of Montana, declaring that the state of Montana violated the youthโs constitutional rights, including their rights to equal protection, dignity, liberty, health and safety, and public trust, which are all predicated on their right to a clean and healthful environment.
This is a HUGE win for our shared climate and for Montanans of all ages. We are moved by these words from Our Children's Trust's () Executive Director, Julia Olson:
"As fires rage in the West, fueled by fossil fuel pollution, todayโs ruling in Montana is a game-changer that marks a turning point in this generationโs efforts to save the planet from the devastating effects of human-caused climate chaos. This is a huge win for Montana, for youth, for democracy, and for our climate. More rulings like this will certainly come.โ
We are so grateful for the youth plaintiffs, attorneys, staff, family members, volunteers, and supporters who made this lawsuit possible, and for Judge Seeley for recognizing and upholding these young peopleโs right to a livable climate. We continue to stand with the plaintiffs and we joyfully celebrate this decision with all Montanans. We also celebrate the nationwide media coverage this case generated, the innumerable climate conversations the case continues to inspire, and the climate science and stories that are now enshrined in public record as a result of the trial.
Onward โ
