“And Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.’”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭23:34‬a

In a fitting Monday chapel after Easter, Dr Cristian Mihut talked with us about forgiveness. He is currently years into researching and writing a book about forgiveness as a virtue. Motivated by personal stories, cultural experiences, and biblical teachings, Dr. Mihut has urged us to cultivate a society of grace, compassion, and forgiveness.

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Ephesians‬ ‭4:32‬

“so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:7-8‬

Today we continued our series on stories of grace. Dr. Brent LaVigne shared three stories of God showing him grace in his life, grace of being seen, grace of surprise, and grace of forgiveness.

Susan Titus shared her story with us, how she and her husband were called to Camp Raybird. She encountered a camper who came out as struggling with same-sex attraction. Susan talked about how the Lord led her into this journey of really studying Scripture and spending time with people of the LGBTQ+ community. She realized a lot of her own brokenness in her own sexuality. God called her to helping those struggling with sexual and gender identity. She and her colleagues at Camp Raybird believe that with intentionality in how they train their counselors, and how they love their campers they can open up the conversation about sexuality. Susan wants to create a safe environment in which people can really wrestle with it. At camp they want to bring life and point to the grace of the gospel. She encouraged us to look at Scripture and to study the Word to form our sexual ethic. Most of all she praised God for how he loves us, and prays continually that the church would proclaim that love better, and be a safe space for people to walk through these questions.

“And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven… I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.””
‭‭Mark‬ ‭2:4-5, 11‬.

Today in chapel we had Jake Bland the CEO of Youth for Christ, an organization focused on bring youth to Christ for his mission on earth. Today he talked about our faith and works.

He said, “God sees your faith, not the work you do, the people you influence, or the ability to hold everything together. God sees your faith in Him. With our faith we need to carry others to Jesus just like the friends of the paralytic man.”

Cole Galbraith is our student speaker this year from our Homiletics class taught by Professor Keith Koteskey. This morning Cole walked us through John 3:1-21 where Jesus meets with Nicodemus, a Pharisee who knew a lot of Scripture but didn’t really know God. Jesus shares the good news of the gospel with him. Jesus has embodied the promise of redemption, he is the Messiah. Jesus embodies the love of God in dying on the cross for us, in becoming a servant. Not only can we have freedom from our sin, but the condemnation that comes with it. In Christ there is no more condemnation.

““For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.””
‭‭John‬ ‭3:16-21‬ ‭NRSV‬‬

Today in Chapel we concluded our Deeper life series. We started off with worship and a time of prayer for one of our Bethel students and their family. Nirup then talked about prayer and the joy we find in God. The joy the father had in Mark 9 when his son was healed from his demon possession.

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds,”
‭‭James‬ ‭1:2‬

Nirup Alphonse - Deeper Life Series
God’s Power in Prayer
In Mark 9:14-29 Jesus heals a boy possessed by an unclean spirit. Nirup highlighted the surrender of the boy’s father to whatever Jesus was willing to do. Jesus was a man of prayer, and he brings that to the forefront for his disciples in this passage. To live the Christian life is to practice surrender and the primary agent by which we do that is prayer. Prayer is an act of surrender. In the church prayer is often talked about but is rarely practiced. Prayer is connected to power.
Nirup defined prayer as both the access point and pathway of heaven’s influence on earth.
He called us to come to the Father in surrender in prayer.

“And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a co**se, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.””

Illusionist Bryan Drake shared some of his tricks with us this morning and shared on how we must be intentional with how we filter through the voices around us. We live within a world that has so many influences battling for our attention. Just as the serpent asked Eve “Did God really say…?” many believers have been led astray by that same question. It is easy to let the influences around us, the culture around us make us question did God really say? We must be careful to examine carefully the secular and Christian influences in our life, constantly taking them back to Scripture. “

The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭17:10-11‬ ‭ESV‬‬
