Greetings friends,
It is with great sadness that I bring you this news. Our dear friend Cristina Vasquez passed away yesterday December 22nd, in San Antonio, TX. Her son Hector Vasquez, Jr. called today with a broken heart as only a son can feel at the loss of a parent. He asked for prayers for his mom and that she be remembered at Mass. I assured him we would pray for her and her family. Cristina Vasquez was a member of the St Agnes Altar Society for many years and a faithful parishioner. She and her husband lived in Mirando City for many years and raised their children here Hector Jr, †Daniel and Elizabeth. She moved to San Antonio after suffering an accidental fall in 2020.

Grant Christina eternal rest, O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.

Hilda

Let us pray that this does not happen again.

September 11 is a day of remembrance. We remember the innocent lives that were lost, and we pray for the families who were affected by the tragedy. We also remember the heroes who risked their lives to save others. On this day, we recommit ourselves to peace and justice, and we pray for healing and reconciliation. Let us never forget those who died on September 11, and let us never give up hope for a better world.

Blessed are they who mourn,
for they will be comforted....
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy....
Blessed are the peacemakers,
For they will be called children of God.
Mt. 5:4,6,7,9

As the sun rises to bring in the new day:

We remember those who descend into the earth, their work begins in darkness, pulling from the earth, the resources we steward.

We remember those who work inside a building away from the light and brightness of the day.

We remember those who work outside in the harsh elements of our world, the bitter cold and sweltering heat of extremes.

We remember those who do not have a job to go to, who are struggling to meet the needs of their daily living expenses, for whom the day becomes long and arduous.

As the sun sets to bring in the evening of rest:

We remember those who work in the night.

We remember those who are trying to recover from their labor and toils of the day.

We remember those who participate in unsafe and dangerous work.

We pray for a renewed sense of dignity in their lives and in their work.

God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the worker. Make a place in our hearts for compassion to the men and women who labor tirelessly for basic necessities. Ensure a place for the men and women who are struggling to find work. Grant us your wisdom to greet and care for those who are unable to work due to illness or circumstances that prevent their participation. Be with the children who are not able to run and play, but instead must put in a hard day’s work to help their family afford to eat, to live. Be with us all, Christ Jesus, as we go about the busyness of our work. Hold us accountable not only for our actions, but most importantly to each of our neighbors. May we continue to work together to bring about your reign! We ask this in your holy name, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

August 2nd, is a special day for all Franciscans, as we celebrate The Feast of Our Lady of the Angels of the Portiuncula. When St. Francis was discerning his vocation, he heard the Lord tell him, "Go and build my church". Francis taking what he heard literally, went and repaired chapels that were deteriorating. The Portiuncula or the “Little Portion,” dedicated to St. Mary of the Angels was one of the three chapels he repaired. The chapel and the land belongs to the Benedictines for it was given to St. Benedict in the 6th century. However, the friars came to live at the Portiuncula in early 1211. It became the “motherhouse” of the Franciscans. It is now enclosed in a basilica in Assisi and the original structure of the Portiuncula is preserved. St. Francis of Assisi persuaded Pope Honorius III to grant a plenary indulgence to all those who visited the Portiuncula on August 2 and confessed their sins. This indulgence has been extended to all churches, especially those held by Franciscans, throughout the world.

ALL YOUR SINS WILL BE FORGIVEN IF YOU COME TO A FRANCISCAN CHURCH ON AUGUST 2

On August 2 of each year, the “Pardon of Assisi” is celebrated in Assisi in the Church of St. Mary of the Angels. This church is also known as the Portiuncula, which means, “little portion of land.”

Saint Mary of the Angels is conceivably the most important Franciscan sanctuary in Assisi for the memories of Francis that it contains. He was so fond of the little church that he once said to the brothers, “If anyone should evict you from one door, return through another one.”

St. Francis lived here with the brothers in community and he considered it his home base. After St. Clare left her family on Palm Sunday, 1212, she met Francis here in the Portiuncula where he gave her the tonsure. Finally, here Francis died on October 3, 1228.

According to the traditional account, in July, 1216, St. Francis was praying in the Portiuncula, when he had a vision of Jesus and the Virgin Mary surrounded by a host of angels.

Mary asked him what grace he desired, to which Francis replied that he desired the complete forgiveness of all sins for everyone who came to his beloved little church. Mary replied that he should go to the pope, inasmuch as he was the Vicar of Christ, to request such an indulgence.

The indulgence was initially limited to the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels in Assisi for August 2. However, over time, the indulgence was extended to all Franciscan churches around the world on that day. Today, the indulgence is available in Assisi any day of the year.

And guess what? Here in Hebbronville, we have a Franciscan Church, the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church!

Though there is less emphasis on indulgences in the Catholic Church these days, the teaching has not been abrogated. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that an indulgence is “a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven” (1471).

To obtain the Assisi plenary indulgence, the faithful should:
* confess, to obtain the forgiveness of sins;
* receive Eucharist, to be spiritually united with Christ;
* pray for the intentions of the pope, to strengthen the bond with the Church, reciting at least our Father, Hail Mary and Glory to the Father;
* recite the Creed and the Our Father;
* visit a Franciscan church or oratory or, alternatively, any parish church.
The plenary indulgence can be requested for oneself or for the deceased.
