MY HEART TRUSTS IN HIM

"The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him" (Psalm 28:7).

Read Psalm 28.

David's family was torn apart by r**e, murder, rebellion, and revolution.
He'd failed as a father, in part because of his polygamous marriages and in part because he was too busy with matters of government and war.
He was powerful; he was successful; he was the king—but he was eventually on the run, fleeing a son who sought to take his life.

Exiled from his family and his people, hiding from his son Absalom, a grief-stricken King David penned a heartfelt prayer, a plea for mercy and justice.

David's world was falling apart—but God was his Rock.
David's family was collapsing—but God was his Rock.
David's government was crumbling—but God was his Rock.
David's throne had been stolen from him—but God was his Rock.
David's subjects had turned against him—but God was his Rock.

The prayer of Psalm 28 expresses the heart's cry of everyone who has languished in a desperate situation. It is a comforting passage to meditate on when you have been slandered, mistreated, and misunderstood by others. It's a plea for God to be your protector, vindicator, and righteous judge.

When your world is falling apart all around you, how do you respond? Do you run to God, or do you blame Him? When you find yourself facing the consequences of your own wrong choices, do you cry out to the Rock of Ages, or do you blame God for not protecting you from the results of your actions?

David understood God. He prayed, "Hear my cry for mercy as I call to you for help" (v. 2). A cry for mercy is the farthest thing imaginable from the demand, "You owe me."

David prayed with his arms raised, putting his mind, spirit, and body into his prayer. He was not just saying a prayer; he was struggling in prayer. Hard work, struggle, suffering, wrestling with God—these difficult experiences are often the prerequisites to victory.

No matter how people may fail you or mistreat you, God is your fortress.
His power never diminishes.
His love for you never changes.
His support for you never wavers.
His mercy toward you never fades.
He is your Rock.

HOLY WEEK, GOOD FRIDAY

IT IS FINISHED!

"When he had received the drink, Jesus said, 'It is finished.' With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit". John 19:30

Just before He breathed His last, our Lord proclaimed, "It is finished" (John 19:30). In our English Bibles, that's three words, but in the original Greek, it's one beautiful word: Tetelestai.

Why do I say it's beautiful? It has to do with grammar and syntax. You see, tetelestai is a perfect passive verb, which means the action of the verb has been accomplished and yet its effects continue on and on.

On the cross, Christ finished His work—He completed His earthly mission—and yet the effects of His perfect sacrifice on our behalf will continue until He comes again. Jesus' death on the cross will continue to bless millions upon millions of people from every tribe, tongue, and nation as they confess with their mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in their hearts God raised Him from the dead (see Romans 10:9).

Jesus is the sole path of salvation for everyone on the face of the earth. His finished work alone atones for sin—and it's always been that way. Even before Jesus came, the saints of the Old Testament were saved by trusting in what God would one day do for them in Christ.

Abraham, by faith, longed for the day when Jesus would say, "Tetelestai." Moses prophesied about the day when that word would be uttered. David sang songs looking forward to that day, and the prophets proclaimed the coming of the Messiah, the one who would crush the head of the serpent (see Genesis 3:15).

Through Christ, there is now nothing to separate us from God the Father—we have been made righteous by the blood of His Son.

Tetelestai. The entire Gospel can be summed up with that one word because Jesus did everything necessary for our salvation when He died upon that cross. He secured our forgiveness and our place in the family of God forever. And now our glorious privilege is to proclaim this Good News.

Christ's work on the cross was sufficient for you, me, and anyone who comes to Him in repentance. The world needs to know It is finished. (Youssef)

DON’T SETTLE FOR LESS THAN GOD’S BEST

"The LORD had said to Abram, 'Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you'" Genesis 12:1

Sadly, it is a common story in the Christian life that God calls us to something wonderful, but we settle for something mediocre along the way and run the risk of missing out on the great things God had planned for us.
When God called Abraham, He told him, "Go . . . to the land I will show you" (Genesis 12:1).

At the time, that land was called Canaan. But when Abraham first left Ur, the city of his birth, he only made it as far as Harran, which was a long way off from Canaan and far from God's best for him.

One of the reasons God called Abraham to leave his old life in Ur was that He wanted to free Abraham from his family's idol worship. God told him, "Go from your country, your people and your father's household" (Genesis 12:1). He knew Abraham needed a clean break from his old way of life.

But Abraham didn't quite make the clean break God desired. Instead, he compromised by allowing Terah, his father, to travel with him (see Genesis 11:31-32). This first compromise allowed for additional compromises—an eventual landslide of them.

The temptation to compromise and settle for less is something we all will face. When this temptation comes, we must stand strong in the promises of God. We miss out on God's best when we compromise with the world or take matters into our own hands.

In Abraham's case, he believed he was honoring his father by settling in Harran. He also thought he was helping fulfill God's promise when he slept with Hagar (see Genesis 16:1-4).

But thank the Lord for His graciousness! He didn't leave Abraham in his sin or forsake him because of his failures. The good news is that God will also do the same for us, no matter how we may have compromised. He stands ready to lead us to His perfect plan for our lives if only we will follow.

Prayer: Lord, thank You that You will never forsake me and that You are working for my good and Your glory. Help me to obey Your will, remembering that You have great plans for my life. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen. (Youssef)

DECEMBER 15

A WONDERFUL LIFE

And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us (Acts 17:26-27).

This time of year I reflect on some of the warm beautiful memories we have in our family. Gathering together is one of them. And, although there are so many “older” favorite movies, one of our favorites is watching the classic Jimmy Stewart movie, It’s A Wonderful Life.

You will recall George Bailey grows up in a small town and has great dreams and aspirations of seeing the world and making lots of money.

But through a series of circumstances that he couldn’t control, George never could get out of that little one-horse town. Every time he tried, something happened to keep him there. And to top it off, through a mistake one day it appeared that he would be sent to jail.

He was ready to end it all when an angel came to show him what the world would be like if he’d never been born. And George Bailey came to understand that even though he didn’t get to achieve his dreams, he did have a wonderful life that impacted many more people than he realized.

I’m convinced there is a little George Bailey in all of us. We want to achieve significance on a huge scale and often forget the small ways that our lives have deeply impacted those around us. Thank God for where He’s placed you and the people you’ve been able to impact. And one day when you meet the Lord, you’ll realize you really did have a wonderful life. Enjoy now!

The OCSO is proud to announce it has two outstanding new additions to its Chaplains Program!

Sheriff Aden recently swore in Pastors Steven Walsh and David Butler.

Pastor Walsh is an Air Force veteran who retired from Hurlburt Field. He’s the prison chaplain at Okaloosa Correctional Institution in Crestview and Chief Chaplain for Serve Ministry – which offers ministry to veterans and first responders dealing with trauma.

Pastor Butler is head of a church in Miramar Beach known as the “Rock and Roll” church. That’s because of its extraordinary saxophone player from New Orleans who relocated here during Hurricane Katrina. He’s been a pastor more than 45 years and done missionary work in 37 countries. He also travels to Washington, D.C., once a month, where he leads a Bible study in the Capitol for members of Congress and their staff.

We are honored to warmly welcome them to the OCSO family, grateful for the guidance, compassion, and support they bring to our team and community.
